Notes for REV. ANTHONY JACOB HENCKEL:

Notes from Billie Fazakerly Harrison: (updates July, 2004)

I understand that the Hinkles were German--a letter from my aunt, Merle Bryan, in May 1976 mentioned that "the Hinkle brothers were run out of Germany as Catholic Priests collaborating with Martin Luther".

Also enclosed in this letter to me from my aunt was the following: a letter sent to my grandmother in Dec. 1974 from Mildred (not sure which Mildred this is, possibly Effie's daughter)--"finally was able to get a copy of the Henckel genealogy.  Find that our great-great-great-great, etc. Anthony Jacob Henckel emigrated from Germany in 1717--settled in Germantown, Pennsylvania and was the founder of St. Michails Lutheran Church there.  I have traced our line back to the 10th child.  It has been interesting.  I would love to do the same with grandma Hinkle's father--the Clampetts--but don't know whether I'll ever get to it.  So much work involved."

I was told by my grandmother, Gladys Christine Meshew Finch that some of the Hinkles settled in Kentucky in an area called Hinkleville, (Ballard Co.). Hinkleville was supposedly named after Casper's son Charles (brother of George listed below).  As my grandmother explained--Hinkleville was a hamlet of about 100 people named after the family.

My grandmother, Gladys Meshew Finch, said that she stayed with grandma Hinkle often and was 'Tena's' favorite grandchild until Aunt Fan separated from her husband and brought her baby daughter to live with them. She said that her grandmother Hinkle was the best cook to her knowledge.  An excellent cook. She also said "uncle Tom always called me 'Miss Woman' and called brother [Josh] 'Preacher'.  He was a 'kid spoiler'."

My grandmother also said she never saw either of her grandfathers. There were pictures of both of them , but they burned with "our" house in 1910. (Not sure which home she was referring to.)

The following notes were taken from a letter about Dr. Joshua White Meshew written after his death, 1926.

"acted wisely in remaining where he began his professional career"

"was a charter member of the Ballard County Medical Society"

"served for many years on his County board of Health"

"during the world war he served in the County board of examiners of enlisted men"

"officer in the bank of Barlow"

"active in the upbuilding of schools"

"communicant of the Methodist Church"

"served on year as Senior Vice President of the South Western Kentucky Medical Association"

"In the sacred precincts of the home, in the social circle, professional duties, in medical accociations, and elsewhere he was ever the same splendid courteous gentleman. We doubt not that had he known of the coming of the fatal stroke, our brother could have consistently said, 'I have fought a good fight, I have kept the faith, henceforth there is laid up for me a Crown of Righteousness.'"

Copy of his eulogy written in 1926 by James F. Dale, a friend of the beloved and respected Dr. Joshua White Meshew.

In a lonely little forest some fifty years ago,

I saw a sturdy litle oak, and stopped to watch it grow.

I saw it grow to manhood, and spread its branches out,

Then on and on in rapture, out-classing those in sight.

I saw him then in med-life with branches towering high,

Far above the average oak of the forest standing by,

He sheltered us in sicknesss and brought us back to health,

He shared with us our sorrows, in poverty or in wealth.

I saw him then in old age, with branches bending low,

Laden with the many burdens of life's great cargo,

But on and on he bore them, with patience brave and true,

Till death, the Grim Reaper, his noble branches slew.

'Twas with sadness and with sorrow we heard the fatal crash,

But we knew in yonder for he'll outshine the rugged past.

This giant oak we speak of is one we all love true,

Our much beloved doctor, Josh White Meshew.

                                James F. Dale

Jean Meshew, Joshua White Meshew's grandson, wrote the following to me when I was requesting information on the Meshew family.

"...he built the first municipal water works in Western Kentucky, primarily as a preventive medicine measure.  He charged 50 cents a month for the water, which many did not pay.  Along came one of the financial "panics" of the time, and grandfather, in addition to his other charities, had co-signed notes for many people, which he had to make good when they couldn't pay.  He was ruined financially, and persuaded the city of Barlow to accept the water company as a gift, so that the remaining debt on it would be paid by the city.  He was 60 when he died.  He was on his way home from a house-call when he pulled his car over to the side of the road and stopped, having a heart attack."

This from Kerr's 'history of Kentucky':

"Doctor Meshew is a man who holds his friends in good account and likes to have them about him. He has great mental resourcefulness, and has accomplished surprising achievements, not only in his calling but in other lines.  Always holding the good of his community at heart, he has generously worked for it, and has found at Barlow his inspiration and congenial surroundings, which have aided him in his life work.  He is a man of personal charm, culture, and wide intellectual interests, and his fellow citizens are very proud of him and the principles for which he has always stood."

Notes for FRANK CECIL MESHEW:

[FINCHM.FTW]

Some of the information I received about Uncle Frank came from Jean Hinkle Riley from Paducah, Kentucky.  The info came from her genealogy of the Hinkle family.  I have found several errors as to dates and the spelling of names.  She had uncle frank's middle name spelled "Crice" instead of Cecil--also aunt Evelyn's middle name spelled as Blaha, which I think might be Black. I don't know if that is correct or not.  Anyway, I apologize for any errors made on my part from info taken from this source.

According to Joyce Meshew Girard, Frank's niece,  "Uncle Frank isn't a big letter writer, he just won't write!".

To talk to Uncle Frank, one had to call him--and ask questions fast and move on to the next question quickly.  He was helpful with my requests on the information I needed, which I appreciated very much.

Source: Billie Fazakerly Harrison, daughter of Martha Louise Finch Fazakerly, daughter of Gladys Christine Meshew Finch:

I have been blessed in many ways, but in one outstanding way more than others. I came from a family of wonderful cooks.  Among the best was Nanny.  Eating her food was always a treat and an experience to look forward to--no matter what she made.  Whether it was a piece of left over home made light bread, sliced and made into toast for breakfast or a feast at thanksgiving or Christmas, it was usually exceptional.  And to grow up in this environment and take all this for granted!  What a surprise it was for me when I started housekeeping myself--so much work!  I'm very thankful that I got to watch Nanny prepare the food she made and that I have some of her best recipes to go by.

While working on the Fazakerly family tree, Chris, my brother suggested that I make a section on "Nanny's recipes".  He said that he would love to taste her homemade light bread one more time before he died.  I tried to make some this last Christmas and it was o.k., but it didn't taste quite like Nanny's.  I believe her secret was adding extra yeast--more than called for in most recipes.

NANNY'S RECIPES:  (along with a few explanations from Billie)

Boiled custard

(This is the clearest and easiest way to follow this recipe--mama's explanation)

Heat one quart of milk in a double boiler.  When hot add the well-beaten yolks of three eggs diluted with 1/2 cup cold milk.  Beat the whites to a stiff froth, adding a pinch of salt.  When well beaten, add a cup of sugar and beat until perfectly smooth.  Then slowly add to the heated milk and cook till it thickens.  Add a teaspoon of vanilla when cold.  By beating the sugar into the egg whites, the custard is made creamy all through.

Banana pudding

2 c. Milk

2 eggs separated

3 tbs. Flour

1/2 c. Sugar

1 tsp. Vanilla

Pinch salt

Bananas (3)

Cookies (vanilla wafers)

Mix flour and sugar and salt in 1/2 cup cold milk.  Heat;  then add egg yellows (which have been beaten in the rest of the milk. This is important).  Stir until thick. Add vanilla.

Let the mixture cool before pouring over the bananas. (or the bananas will have a cooked taste).  Can use a small whip to ensure smoothness. To make juicy add 1/c cup more milk.  For a larger pudding, use 3 cups milk, 3 eggs, 2/3 cup sugar.

Meringue

Oven 350 degrees or 475 to 500 degrees if you only want to brown the top of meringue quickly. Watch closely.

2 egg whites (large eggs) or 3 medium sized eggs. Have them at room temperature. (i believe this is the trick to making good meringue.)

1/4 tsp. Cream of tatar  (optional)

4 tbs. Sugar or 6 tbs. If use three eggs

1/2 tsp. Vanilla

Beat the egg whites until stiff; add cream of tartar; slowly add sugar; then vanilla

Coconut cake

Duncan hines white cake deluxe baked in two layers (9 inch round or square pans)

Fill with divinity filling or powdered sugar filling.

Put a mixture of crushed pinapple, coconut, and a tablespoon of mashed bananas between layers.  Put juice of pinapple on top layer before icing.  Ice and apply coconut.

Pineapple upside down cake

This works great in a cast iron skillet

Melt stick oleo in skillet

Sprinkle 1/4 cup brown sugar over butter

Top and dot about the contents of a small can of crushed pinapple on the butter and sugar mixture--use juice and pinapple. (you can also use pinapple rings with a cherry in the middle)

1/2 cake mix (duncan hines) prepared according to instructions on box and pour over above mixture.

Bake in a 375 degree oven.

Jam cake

1/2 cup of butter or margarine

1 and 1/2 c. Sugar

3 eggs well beaten

2 c. Flour

1/2 c. Buttermilk

1 tsp. Soda

1 tsp. Cinnamin

1/2 tsp. Cloves

2 cups jam

Cream butter and sugar thoroughly.  Add eggs.  Sift together flour, soda, spices and add to first mixture, alternating with buttermilk.  Add jam last. Pour into 9 inch round pans.

Bake in 350 degree oven for 35 minutes.

Fried pies (one of Gramps' all time favorites, bfh)

Package evaporated peaches, apples, or apricots.

For peaches, cover with water, stew until very tender. (watch them--they will burn easily)

Mash with potato masher

Add one cup sugar and cook until the sugar dissolves.  Can add nutmeg or cinnamin. Allow to cool before you make the pies.

Canned biscuit do not make good pies.

Make a basic biscuit dough. Knead your dough on a floured bread board until it isn't sticky.  Cut out biscuit and roll biscuit thin to about size of a saucer.  Until you get the hang of it i wouldn't try more than 8 at one time.  Have your shortening hot in a small skillet or electric fry pan.  You can cook four at a time in it.  Have all your biscuit rolled out and peaches inside--about a tablespoonful.  Too much of the peaches run out and spoil the grease.  Press the edges of the dough together with a fork or your fingers.  Have shortening about 1/2 inch deep in pan.  Turn once.  I use a fork and turner to turn mine. I stick my pies with a fork all around as soon as i drop them in the hot skillet.

Fry at 400 degrees.  Don't have peaches too juicy.

Peanut butter fudge (another of Gramps' favorites; my son's as well, bfh)

2 cups sugar

2 tablespoons karo syrup

1/4 teaspoon salt

2/3 cup of milk

Large hunk of peanut butter--about the size of an egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

Cook all of the above ingredients (except the peanut butter and vanilla) until it forms a soft ball in water. (use a clean teaspoon each time you dip into the syrup and drip into cool water in cup and try to form  soft ball with finger)

Take off stove--add peanut butter and vanilla--set in cold water--and beat until thick and grainy.  Pour into greased platter quickly.  Cut when cool.  (if you add the peanut butter at the beginning, it may scorch.)

Buttermilk corn bread

1 cup buttermilk

1/2 tsp. Salt

1 tablespoon sugar

1/2 tsp. Soda (level)

1 tsp. Baking powder (level)

1 egg

Meal for consistency--add meal last--at least a cup--mix should be "pourable", not thick.

Pour into pre-heated hot skillet with melted. Hot grease in it.

Bake at 375 to 400 degrees for about 30 minutes.

Dressing

Fresh cornbread

Equal amount of light bread (loaf)

Onion

Two eggs

Celery leaves

Salt, pepper, sage, to taste

Soften with chicken broth

Use potato masher for smooth texture

Put in greased pan and pour more broth over the contents.

Bake until brown. (Perhaps 30 to 45 minutes)

Hot water cornbread or "doughty" boys

2 cups water

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup sugar

1 and 1/4 cups self rising corn meal

Bring water, salt, and sugar to a boil. Turn off heat.  Add meal and stir until thick-- consistency to make patties. (mixture will be hot.  Use cool running water to cool hands in between making patties.)

Fry at moderate heat.  Do not use deep fat for frying.  About 1/4 inches deep in skillet or griddle.

"Cracklin" or Crackling bread (this recipe is one of a kind, pure joy to eat, bfh)

Use above recipe (hot water corn bread) and add about half of a pound package of cracklings.  If cracklings are large, I grind them.  Make into larger patties than doughty boys  (hot water corn bread), about 3 times as large.  Bake at 400 degrees until brown.

Nanny's home made light bread (good luck! I've never known anyone to make it taste like hers, bfh)

Sift about 11 cups of regular flour into a mixing bowl and make a hole in the flour to put other ingredients in.  Then add:

1 tablespoon salt

1/2 cup sugar

2 tablespoons crisco

2 and 1/2 cups warm water

1 cake fleischman's yeast dissolved in 1/2 cup water (warm).  {when nanny made this  bread she doubled the amount of yeast to two cakes or two packs of yeast.  She saidthis helped to make the bread rise faster---but i also believe this was the secret to her incredible bread.  The extra yeast made it taste better.}

Mix. Turn out on floured board and knead until it isn't sticky.  This makes two skilletfulls.  (black iron skillets)  have pans greased.  Turn dough in pans to grease the top.  Allow to rise double size--about one to two hours--depending on the amount of yeast.   Bake at 375 degrees.  Don't use self-rising flour.  Powdered yeast is about as good as the cake and keeps better.  You might have better luck to half the recipe until you get the hang of it.

Relish (salad)

Chop together (fine)

Onion

Bell pepper

Ripe tomato

Cucumber

Add salt, pepper, sugar, and vinegar to taste.  Serve with peas and other vegetables. (Mimi's recipe called for apple vinegar and celery or celery seed and a red onion.)

Hash

Chop roast beef fine.  Dice onion and potato.  Add celery (salt, seed, or fresh), sage, and pepper to taste.  Simmer.  Serve over home made biscuit.

Salad dressing. (This is mama's recipe not Nanny's, but it is a good dressing. Bfh)

Bottle French dressing

Cottage cheese--one carton

2 eggs--hard boiled--chopped

1 large tablespoon of mayonaise

3 tablespoons catsup

Mix.  Wonderful over lettuce leaves.

Nanny was a wonderful grandmother.  She never raised her voice or lost her temper with me.  The look on her face would speak volumes.  You instantly knew if you were out of line.  She could be very strict but never unkind.  She was a very patient and calm person; and a good teacher, whether she was showing me how to make doll clothes or showing me how to crochet or helping me with my math and Latin lessons. She once told me that she thought she was sometimes slow.  She was never slow; just very methodical and consistent, and careful about any task she had to do. I always enjoyed being with Nanny.  I especially remember that she was always very well dressed.  I believe her mother enjoyed nice clothes and all the early pictures of Nanny and Aunt Merle and their mother show beautiful and some rather elaborate outfits.  Nanny was also fond of costume jewelry, in particular--long bead necklaces and butterfly pins.  She was proud to be from Kentucky and she enjoyed watching and listening to basketball games.  Teaching was her life--it was often a relief and comfort to her to be able to leave her problems behind and go teach--she was very dedicated--maybe at times too dedicated but she taught for 35 years and dearly loved her profession.  She told me that when she and Gramps started out, she would read their lessons out loud to him in order for them to prepared for their classes each day--it must have been a good way from home to school. [My guess is that she already had her lessons ready and was helping him with his. bfh]

She never traveled from home much, but she came to visit me twice with Bobby in Galveston, Texas after my children were born.  After this she went with Mimi and Mama to Kentucky for a visit, and on the way home, slipped and fell in a restroom-- but wasn't hurt badly--just bruised. However, the episode scared Mimi and Mama so much that they each had to take tranquilizers.  After this Mimi didn't want nanny to travel again. (It was too hard on Mimi's nerves!)

Nanny was well respected and loved by her students and her family.  She always worked hard and took good care of all of her family, and she truly loved all her grandchildren.  Holidays at Nanny's were very special occasions for all of us.  Nanny had a hard life, but never complained. She was a sweet and kind woman, but no pushover. She was a saint--and at times a very tough saint--but one with a good sense of humor! She was an honorable woman and I loved her dearly and miss her.

Jean Pierre Meshew, her nephew, wrote in a recent letter that "Aunt Gladys was one of those saints St. Paul described as 'unknown, yet well known'--unknown to men, but glorious in the sight of god."  "...she was a solid rock in the midst of adversity.  I am proud to know that I am kin to such a great lady."

Letter from July 7, 2005

Howard Meshew, a cousin of the family (descendant Francis M. Meshew), had the following to say when I asked him if he had any ideas about where my grandmother may have gone to school. I heard also that someone had founded a college though I don't think this is where my grandmother went. (I wasn't sure which family founded the college--I get the Meshews & Hinkles mixed up sometimes.)

Howard's response:

"The college was founded by the father of the wife of James Newton Meshew, Martha E. White. Joshua was given her maiden name as his middle name. I believe that Martha raised my grandfather's sister, Ella, when her parents died. She became a school teach in Mayfield. Martha was said to be very high on education. I believe that Fay Meshew Combs told me this. Fay was a g-daughter of James Newton Meshew. Fay was an RN who met her husband in Georgia where Joe Combs was a psychiatrist."

"I checked a few colleges in or around the Purchase Area (Westery KY) looking for ones that existed when Gladys would have attended. Some people in the Purchase Area went to Murry State University (71 miles by car) and also to WKU, western Kentucky University. We sometimes refer to the students there as "Hilltoppers" because its on a hill. This is in Bowlingreen, KY. Both were in existance during Gladys time."

I remember that Gramps had something special done to his shoes, (at least the shoes he wore around the house) in the area of the toes.  They were split or raised in some way.  He had lost some toes years ago and I had thought it was from a hoeing accident; but, Aunt Laverne believes it happened when a horse stepped on his foot.

I can remember that when young, I was always eager to visit and hoped to get to stay overnight at Nanny and Gramps' house.  I can remember taking long walks with gramps (to the store or school) and he taught me how to swing my arms while walking.  He was a very sensitive person.  Mama said he was very tenderhearted. He liked to write poetry and I have a few of his poems he had published in the newspapers.

I never knew anyone who could eat as much as he did and not gain weight!  He loved fresh peaches; " pot-likker" from cooked greens; fried oysters; apricot fried pies; and peanut butter fudge. The only thing i knew that he didn't like was green peas.  When Gramps was ill and in a sanatorium for his lung condition, (emphysema) I used to watch and help nanny prepare his favorites and carry them to him on visits.  Josh, my son, and I to this day would rather have peanut butter fudge than any other kind of fudge.

In one picture sent to me from Aunt Laverne, gramps is wearing a uniform. It looks almost like an army uniform.  I know gramps was involved in some way with the civilian conservation corps at one time.  Aunt Laverne believes this is his CCC (civilian conservation corps) uniform.  The picture was taken in the early 1940's and Jimmy is wearing Gramps hat and saluting to the camera.  Aunt Laverne believes he was a director of the CCC camp in Lexington. (Tennessee or Kentucky ?)  She thought the program involved taking care of poor young men, giving them a place to stay and food to eat and well as allow them to make things like leather wallets to sell.  The program also involved things like planting trees, and other areas of" planned management of natural resources".

Gramps loved Christmas and hated to see it end. It would leave him depressed. I especially remember every Christmas Eve putting gum drops on the little plastic trees gramps and nanny bought for each of the seven grandchildren. I still have one very fragile tree in my china cabinet.  My children put gumdrops on the tree now.

Nanny told me that the night he died he had asked her to hold his hand and then he passed away in his sleep.  He was suffering from his emphysema and I thought his easy passing was a blessing.  Aunt Laverne said it was a relief that he died that way because he dreaded going through it.  If I remember correctly, it seems that Jimmy came over that morning and helped Nanny in some way (by shaving Gramps' beard or changing his clothes maybe) before he went to the funeral home.  He was buried at the Memorial Gardens cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee. Nanny, Mama, Mimi, & Uncle Harry are buried there also.

Marriage Notes for GLADYS MESHEW and SAMUEL FINCH:

[Finchm.ftw]

Here are a few comments made by Aunt Laverne about Nanny and Gramps' wedding, Christmas Eve, 1916.

"I guess Clayborne and Gladys got married in Barlow and came home later.  Seems there was a party for them but I was in bed.  But my!! My!! A white dress in Winter Time!  I was overwhelmed---oh, it was a beauty.  I guess I was speechless.  That dress was wool, fitted waist, plain round neck and skirt only a little full."

Laverne Finch Herriman

Sister in law

I believe the picture of nanny that was on the wall in the living room (where she put her Christmas tree each year) was a picture of her in that same dress.  If so she had to have been a lovely sight to see that day.

Notes for MARTHA LOUISE FINCH:

Martha Louise Finch Mulkey Fazakerly Matthews: 1923-1984

1st marriage: Robert Mulkey

2nd marriage: William Thomason Fazakerly

I remember that Mama said that the only children she liked were her own.  I always questioned this--since children always seemed to trust and love her.  Bobby's and Jimmy's children (great nieces and nephews) always enjoyed visiting Mama and my children were crazy about her--she let them do just about anything they wanted--unlike when Tommy, Chris, and I grew up.

Mama could be quite paradoxical at times.  She was often wrapped up in her own problems and always worked so hard that it didn't seem as though she got to spend much time with us.  This is not a complaint.  I'm a parent now and I know how life can be so overwhelming at times.

Mama could be full of surprises and she made certain times very special.  If we were ill--not with minor illnesses but really sick--she and Daddy would give us little gifts to cheer us up.  Once when I had the mumps on both sides at once, followed by an ear infection, I was given a cute little red bag with nursery rhymes written all over the outside and inside was a jump rope.  Another time--and it may have been the time I was so ill with red measles--I was given a parakeet.

How Mama loved Christmas.  She and Daddy never had much money, so she put a lot of effort into decorating, cooking, sewing, and having fun.  I still remember my first Teddy Bear they gave me.  Birthdays were also very special in that while we were young, we each got a gift to open.  I carried this tradition on with my children when they were young.  Mama was clever with her sewing, too, when she could find the time.  One special gift that she made when I was young and that I loved dearly was a black velvet cape with an attached hood lined in white satin.  It was very elegant.  I also remember a very cute summer ensemble she made out of blue and white seersucker: shorts, halter, blouse, and skirt.  Later on when she became ill and she had more time, Nanny, her mother, taught her how to crochet; and, naturally she did beautiful work.  She crocheted like an expert that had done this all her life.  She would make adorable crocheted lambs, lions, etc. for the grandchildren and young nieces and nephews. She was also generous.  Sometimes to a fault.  She gave things away because she either no longer needed an item; but, more often than not gave something away simply because someone else wanted what she had.  Material things were never important to her.

Mama was also extremely intelligent and nothing seemed too hard for her.  She quit school to get married, the first of several times.  She was about 15 years old; but later obtained her G.E.D. (Graduate Equivalent Diploma) and went to school for several months to become a histology tech--preparing tissue slides.  Later she studied to become a licensed practical nurse.  She had good grades but quit when she realized she had trouble being around sick people.  This didn't surprise me since she was so fastidious.  Mama liked to read and loved history.  Her favorite book was "The Last of the Mohicans" by James Fennimore Cooper.  She also loved biblical history and often studied her Bible.

Mama and Daddy both loved dogs, and it seems we always had one around.  Mama especially liked German shepherds.  We got our collie, Lassie, from a fishing trip.  She had been abandoned and had an injured hip.  It was hard for Mama and Daddy to resist any dog, especially one that needed help.  We were thrilled to take her home that day.  Lassie insisted that Mama stay as close to her as possible when she had her first litter of puppies.

Another thing I remember about Mama and Daddy was that they were always so well groomed--so neat about themselves and their surroundings.  Where we lived and what we had was never fancy but everything was always clean and attractive.  They were both very industrious--never idle.  As busy as they were they still found time to take us to the park to cook out or hunt for Easter eggs, or took us on fishing trips and picnics.  They also took us to the fairgrounds or to Maywood to swim.  Ours wasn't a perfect home and at times there were heartaches; but, for me there were also many pleasant memories.

Life was hard for Mama and Daddy; but, they also brought hardships on themselves at times. I felt Mama was little too fearless and outspoken for own good and that often created problems.  She could certainly evoke strong emotions in others.  She could never be considered an humble or shy person.  She could be easy to love, and then often aggravating, but never ignored.  I admired her tremendous strength, will power, and strong personality. (Too bad it couldn't quite surpass Zack's.) She was truly a devoted Christian. She would have been great in the crusades--a real warrior.  Mama was often a chameleon, reflecting the circumstances surrounding and influencing her at any given time.  This often made her seem to have many personalities when in fact it showed her awesome ability to adapt to any given situation.  She was a survivor. Unfortunately, her aunt told her that her parents did not really want her when she came along since they already had Merle "Mermie" their (adorable) four year old daughter. Mama spent the rest of her life trying to win their love and compete with Mermie for attention--she also became a wild little rebel and remained so.

Growing up, and all through her adult life, Mama had her own personal guardian angel--her aunt, LaVerne Finch Herriman.  Aunt LaVern, now 85, was the one that Mama always went to when she needed help and comfort.  At times Mama could try the patience of "Job"; but, Aunt LaVerne was forever patient and kind and helpful.  Aunt LaVerne helped look after Mama until she died in 1984 from emphysema. Mama died at the Jackson County Hospital in Jackson, Tennessee, August 1984.  She was 61 years old.  She was buried at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery near her mother and father in Memphis, Tennessee.

Notes for WILLIAM THOMASON FAZAKERLY:

William Thomason Fazakerly, Sr.: 11918-1968

Tall dark and handsome.  Greenish-blue eyes and brown wavy hair.  Six feet tall and 200 pounds.  Daddy was basically a shy, timid person even though he had been a "cop". He was slow to anger (but just awful when he became angry).  He had a good personality and was popular and well liked. Daddy was very intelligent--never had to struggle with the books--a quick learner.

Daddy had many hobbies and talents.  He was quite gifted as a carpenter, electrician, etc.  He built the back room onto our house on Jefferson in Memphis and I still remember the beautiful thick door that was split (called a dutch door) so that when you opened the top part, you could let the sunlight and air in.  He later converted the house into a duplex.  He made a large "doll" bed for me that I used for my dolls, and later for my own children, visiting nieces and nephews, and hope to use it for my grandchildren.

Daddy loved ice cream.  As a treat we would drive across town to this special place across from the fairgrounds.  It had two huge stone polar bears out front. This ice cream parlor served wonderful soft custard.  Daddy also liked to fish and swim; and we went often to places like the park to cook out, or a lake to spend the day and fish, and went to other places like Maywood to picnic and swim. Maywood was a unique place to swim.  It was a large and beautiful area but unlike a pool. It had a sandy bottom but blue clear water. I loved going there.

I remember staying home sick from school on day and watched Daddy work hours on making chop suey for supper.  He was an outstanding cook.  He and Mama both were; and, often worked together putting together masterpieces.  I liked everything they made.  There was only one exception--I just never could acquire a taste for wild game. (I don't think they liked it either, much.) They were good about not forcing us to eat something we didn't like as long as we at least gave it a try.  My brothers, Tommy and Chris, may tell a different story. They were often caught hiding food behind the refrigerator or dropping it under the table. I can still remember Tommy sitting at the table with his mouth packed full and refusing to swallow.  My parents were not pleased with these antics.

Daddy didn't go with us to Nanny's or Mimi's to eat during special occasions because he claimed that he choked easily. (True) At the time I figured he just didn't want to go and that may be; but, I wonder now if he didn't have trouble with esophageal spasms.  He had complained before about having trouble swallowing sometimes.  (Mama thought that he may have had a mild stroke in the early years that they were married because he changed the way he held a pencil and pen to write--he held it and wrote in a very odd way.  Maybe this affected his swallowing as well.  He certainly wouldn't let on about it though.)

I've never known anyone so terrified of going to the doctor or dentist. I've seen him sweat out an abscessed tooth and suffer terribly before getting help.  From one accident where he fell and his glasses broke and slivers of glass became embedded in his face, he refused to let Uncle Harry (a doctor) see him.  He was picking glass out that had festered for months.  I think Zack finally got him to a doctor eventually. I won't try to describe what it took for me, Zack, and Aunt Frances to get him to the hospital when he had his heart attack. Daddy was a very brave man but suffered terribly due to his phobia of doctors.  Perhaps some of this developed when his brother, George, went through so much awful suffering with his mastoiditis and surgery when he was young.  Daddy just wouldn't take care of himself and he died young, at 49. He was buried at Forest Hill cemetery in Memphis. One note of irony:

when Daddy's grandmother died he inherited $2,000.  Within just a few days of Daddy's death, a disability check finally came in that he had been waiting for.  It was $2,000.  He never got to spend it. Zack used this to help pay his funeral costs.  I believe that these were the only two times in his life that he ever had such a "significant" amount of money.

Daddy loved westerns, Dragnet, and his all time favorite program was the Jackie Gleason show.  I can still hear him laughing hard.  He thought the star on the western series, the Lawman, looked like his father.  Daddy was about seventeen when his father died.

Daddy didn't go to church with us, but I remember that he liked Mr. Bigelow to visit from the First Evangelical Church where we went.  He would tell Daddy stories about his father, a missionary, and how his father had been killed by an elephant, etc.

Daddy was married before and he has another daughter, Joyce.  She and her husband live in Ocala, Florida.  Until last year, I had met her only once--at Daddy's funeral--but Zack spoke of her a few times through the years. Daddy was close to his mother, my grandmother, Zack, and she helped Daddy often.  She was generous and good to us; and, his sister, Aunt Frances, has been a very important person in my life and has also been very generous, helpful, and kind.

He worked for the Memphis Police Department three years before he went into the Army as a military policeman during WW II.  After the war he returned to the Memphis Police Dept.  Daddy had been a policeman for nineteen years before he quit after an unfortunate incident (didn't have to quit); and did odd jobs thereafter.  He only mentioned a few stories about his earlier experiences.  One story concerned a thief that he had to chase through a neighborhood.  He had to chase this guy through basements, over fences, through yards, etc. before catching the guy.  Another story concerned learning the hard way not to suddenly wake sleeping people on park benches.  They could (and a few did) wake up fighting wildly before they came to their senses.  I only made a few trips to where he worked.  He said he didn't want me exposed to the type people arrested there that we might have to see.

He and my mother, Martha, had a very turbulent relationship.  They were miserable with and without each other and it took me years to accept their last divorce.  The lady Daddy knew (Bernice Baker) just before he died was a very kind and gentle person and good for Daddy.  Even Mama said she tried to hate her but just couldn't; she was such a good person.

Our upbringing was often stormy and Daddy was far from perfect; but, he loved us and I loved him.  I'm thankful to say I have some very fond and pleasant memories.

Aunt Frances added this note about Daddy: "When Willie was about 15, he was playing softball with neighborhood friends.  When it was his time to "catch", he was accidentally hit in the forehead and nose with the bat.  Perhaps this had a lot to do with his sinus (problems) and headaches.  Also when he dove into shallow water and hurt his neck, Zack stayed up all night massaging his neck and back.  She was afraid he would be paralyzed.  Apparently, all went OK as he was better the next day." (Daddy had awful headaches through the years--perhaps there had been some mild nerve damage in his neck that caused these.)

August 7, 1995

On our trip to Memphis, Uncle Floyd took us by the library to try to do some research.  While there we met a family doing research also and the lady, Mrs. Lillian M. Coffey, (formally Jones) happened to know Daddy.  She used to work at the courthouse.  She even remembered meeting us when we were young.  She said many kind things about Daddy; and, said that he was a wonderful person and had done many good works--working with such places as the Ava Maria Home, etc. (Aunt Frances said that Zack had worked there for a while.) She said that she thought he was Italian, with his looks and his name. Mrs. Coffee had had a stroke and even though her speech was clear, she couldn't write well and she had her husband write their address down for me. Before we left she had to give me a big hug and said more nice things about Daddy.  What a pleasant person!  After all these years, what are the chances of running into someone that knew him from so many years ago the first night we were in Memphis?  Aunt Frances also said that the current chief of police goes to her church and she said that he told her that he and Daddy had gone to through the police academy together.  He also had nice things to say about Daddy.

(During the war daddy served as a Military Policeman (MP) in Winipeg, Canada. He told stories about how terribly cold it was up there. He said he had to put felt in his shoes to keep them dry and warm. He also told a story about a bear coming in one end of the barracks and everyone running out the door at the other end. Aunt Frances told me that he told her about being on guard duty and and at the end of the shift he was so frozen and stiff they had to help him out of the small hut he was in. He also mentioned fishing and catching large Pike up there.)

WILLIAM THOMASON FAZAKERLY, JR.:

Little Rock, Arkansas is where Tommy owns a large home.  At one time five blocks away was where President Bill Clinton once lived as Governor of Arkansas.  President Clinton jogged by in front of Tommy's house and would often speak to Tommy in passing. Tommy has also met him other times in town. Tommy wanted to add the following to the family tree history.

"Being a Fazakerly has never been dull. I always thought my name was special; it has always set up a field of conversational lead in.  I have never regretted having this special name, except for the one time during my career that I had to sign my name a few hundred times at once; I was not able to get a name stamp made in time.

I would like to give my special thanks to my sister Billie Lynn for this opportunity to be a written part of this family history."

                                                                                            William Thomason Fazakerly, Jr.

Tommy has always been a very dear brother.  He has a pleasant personality and is always easy to get along with.  He can also be very stubborn at times. Mama told me once that she knew I would make a good mother since I had so much experience raising hers.  Tommy was never any trouble to me and was often very helpful with this awesome task. Tommy is also a very generous person in many ways.

19.  AUGUSTA MERLE10 FINCH (GLADYS CHRISTINE9 MESHEW, MATTIE MILDRED8 HINKLE, THOMAS GEORGE7, CASPER6, CHARLES ANTHONY5, CAPTAIN CHARLES4, JACOB ANTHONY3 HENCKEL II, ANTHONY JACOB2, GEORGE1)48 was born 12 Oct 1919 in Barlow, Ballard Co., Kentucky, and died 05 Nov 1976 in Memphis, Shelby Co., Tennessee.  She married (1) DR. HARRY GRAHAM BRYAN48 May 1942 in Probably Memphis, Shelby Co., Tennessee, son of SAM BRYAN and ELINOR CRUTCHER.  He was born 16 Oct 1913 in Dickson, Dickson Co., Tennessee, and died 08 Nov 1968 in Memphis, Shelby Co., Tennessee.  She married (2) JAMES MAYO STRAWBRIDGE49 Abt. 1938, son of ALLEN STRAWBRIDGE and GERTRUDE.  He was born Abt. 1910 in Tennessee or Illinois.

Notes for AUGUSTA MERLE FINCH:

1996:

Mimi told me once that she got the giggles when she married Uncle Harry.  She said she thought that would be the end of the wedding then and there.  Mimi was always a bit high-strung and could get upset easily. (My mother could provoke the devil out of her).  She could be very out spoken and strict at times--but not mean.  I believe Uncle Harry absolutely adored her.  She also told me once that if she was upset and cried that Uncle Harry would leave the house.  He just could not stand to see her upset.

(One of the times was around the time Jimmy got married. Emotionally she was a mess preparing for his wedding.)

Mimi suffered from back trouble almost all her adult life.  She believed it was due to a diving accident when she was younger. (Dove off a bridge).  Mary Ann said in a letter recently that "it had rained and had shifted the depth of the river bed." she had to have surgery on her back  more than once.  I remember after one of these times she wanted me to wash her hair--but she had to stay flat on her back.  What a job that was.  By the time we were through it was a wonder she didn't have to go back to surgery!  We used some type of inner tube mechanism.  It worked and she was determined to have it done.

Mimi was always very generous and helpful to me through the years.  She said that she had wanted to be a nurse and she and Uncle Harry encouraged me to become one.  Mimi also offered to have my wedding to James in her home.  This caused a tremendous amount of work on her part.  She also made my wedding dress for me.  It was a lovely wedding and I am sure I never thanked her enough for her efforts.  My mind was on Graduation from nursing school and getting married.

Only later did I come to appreciate what she had done for me to help me get married.

When you are young you take things so much for granted. I finally realized just how much Mimi had helped me through the years and how much she had gone out of her way to do very special things for me--and for my brothers. Many of these things were "above and beyond the call of duty".

Thank you, Mimi.

I know Mimi was very proud of her grandchildren: Jennifer, Emily, and Matthew.

Mimi told me the story that one day she was cutting out coupons---and I don't remember which child was watching or helping with this---but, as a child will mimic adult actions---either Jennifer or Emily proceeded to cut out portions of Mimi's bible.  She was laughing when she told the story---but I doubt she was laughing at the time---unless she was laughing and crying at the same time. I can't remember for sure but I believe she was able to get the damage fixed.

Grandmothers!  What tolerant souls.  So unlike the way they were with their own kids.  I've watched my mother let my children get away with things that she would have simply killed me for.

Mimi worked for an eye doctor in Memphis for awhile.  She had her ups and downs.  I don't think she ever really got over Uncle Harry's death. I was told that Uncle Harry had asked her not to re-marry.  I believe Mimi really needed someone to love and care for her.  She tried to commit suicide twice and I believe died from complications from the last effort. She just "wanted to go". She was through here. I believe poor John, her son, unfortunately found her both times. (John told me Nancy found her and got help.) I know her children miss her as I miss my own mother.

Notes for DR. HARRY GRAHAM BRYAN:

1996:

Dr. Bryan (Uncle Harry) was a soft-spoken person; a very good doctor; sensitive to people's needs and was well loved and respected.  If you were a child he could make you feel at ease.  If you were an adult he could be extremely stern; no-nonsense but kind with a gentle sense of humor. He was a soft-spoken person--never loud.  I'll never forget how he helped me with getting daddy to the hospital when he had his heart attack.  He did so much for so many of us.

Uncle Harry was a Captain in the Army Medical Corps.  He was stationed in Hawaii.

He took pre-medical courses at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis.  He Interned at Baptist hospital and was a resident surgeon there.  Before entering the army, he was with the army depot.  This information was from a Memphis newspaper. The date had been cut off.  It also stated that Mrs. Bryan lived at 1882 Madison.

According to some notes from Nanny years ago, she said that Mimi and Uncle Harry lived with them in the house on 1405 Agnes place in Memphis, Tennessee from December 1945 to March 1947 and that John had been born while they lived there.

Addendum, July 2004; I had "Speculated" that Uncle Harry probably met Mimi in Memphis in some professional capacity--either seeing her as a patient or perhaps seeing her son, Jimmy.

Years ago, Uncle Harry told me he had been a pediatrician at one time--or had considered becoming a pediatrician--but changed specialties. (The kids were fine, but the mothers were something else.) This is where I got the idea that he may have met Mimi through seeing Jimmy as a child.

That is not the way it happened.

After a recent trip to visit my cousin John Bryan, I was told that his mother, Mimi, was working for the Ford Motor Company in Washington, DC, just before the war started, and that she hurt her ankle and saw Uncle Harry, who happened to be the company doctor at the time. He asked Mimi out and they got married fairly soon after that.

I thought they had probably met in Memphis, since Uncle Harry went to school, interned, and had his surgical residency there, but it appears they met in Washington, DC.

***2004 addendum: The following notes were from memory by Jimmy & Mary Ann. There are a few discrepancies in the facts--see the 1920 & 1930 census records below--but the information is still remarkable considering it came from spontaneous recall.

1996 cont.: Jimmy and Mary Ann were able to tell me some things about uncle Harry's family. Jimmy said that uncle Harry's mother's maiden name was "Crutcher". His father was Samuel Graham Bryan.

(*The 1920 census stated Sam H. Bryan, but census records can be wrong.)

*Years ago I found a book of Uncle Harry's--"Swiss Family Robinson". This may have been among my Grandfather Finch's things that I found at my grandmothers. (Strangely, an 1886 Fazakerly/Thomason book had been found among his things too.) Or the book may have been among one of my cousin's things that got mixed up with my brother's things. I'm just not sure. Anyway, Inside the cover of the book there is a notation to Harry Graham Bryan, Dickson, Tenn., from Harry H. Graham, dated 1922, Lake Providence, La.

I wonder if this was Uncle Harry's grandfather or uncle? It appears that Uncle Harry was named after one or both of these men: Sam H. Bryan & Harry H. Graham

According to Mary Ann's letter, Uncle Harry's father died from gangrene of the foot when uncle Harry was ten years old. (1923).

According to Mary Ann & Jimmy, Uncle Harry had several sisters and he was the youngest.

Sammye was the oldest girl (*actually Mary was the oldest) and named after her father, Samuel Graham Bryan. (Sam H. Bryan?) Sammye married Byrum or Byron Boone and lived in Nashville, TN.  Their daughter, Bettye Lou married Lewis Bennett--a salesman with Ethnicon surgical supplies.

Another sister, Frances married late in life.

Then there was Louise, a nurse in Tennessee.  According to Mary Ann, the middle girl, Mary, had schizophrenia and was in an institution.

Another sister was Ruth.  She was married to Charlie Murray and they lived in Waverly, TN. Jimmy believes Charlie worked for the state of Tennessee in some sort of office job.  He said he thought Ruth worked in a car dealership. Their daughter, Mary Ann, died of Diphtheria when she was six months old.  Mary Ann Bryan was named after her.

Uncle Harry's mother died in 1948 possibly from a heart attack.

Uncle Harry died from cancer in 1968.  I helped take care of him a few times after his kidney surgery and later at home when he was terminal.  He didn't want to go to the hospital unless it became too hard on Mimi, which it did.  While I cared for him, he never complained. When the home health nurse came to start an I. V., he wanted me to hold his hand so he wouldn't accidently jerk it out if he woke up suddenly or forget it was there--NOT because he didn't want to get "stuck" again, but to save the nurse another trip to the house. That was how considerate he was. He was an amazing person.  Even toward the end he was more concerned with those around him than himself.  He didn't want to inconvenience anyone.  All the nurses that knew and worked with him adored him.  He was well loved and respected. It was an honor being his neice.

Notes for JOHN DUNCAN BRYAN:

July 2004

Too much time has gone by. Too many years wasted.

What fun we had as kids. John could always make me giggle--especially in church.

I loved the story about your being handed the Communion Plate in church to 'partake and pass on' and you handed it back and said, "No thanks, I'm not hungry". You said Mimi got you good for that one.

Remember throwing green peas at each other every Thanksgiving & Christmas at Nanny's?

You were always 'concocting' some new game to play--usually guaranteeing admonishing from the adults.  What fun we had.

Then we grew up and lost contact with each other. How sad and inexcusable on my part.

I'll forever be thankful that John was with Tommy, my brother, when he died in 1999.

James & I spent our vacation in New York July 2004 and visited with John & Nancy in Clyde, New York. What an incredible trip. We all had such a great time. We were able to share old memories and create new ones. That was so special to me. Nancy was such a gracious hostess and had so many great ideas about visiting special places in the area. Listening to her music was a pleasure. It was so much fun meeting their new kittens: Mamie & Louise. What darlings. Swimming in Lake Ontario was a unique experience for me. Even in July, the water was "freezing", but refreshing at the same time.

One of the things I loved the most about the trip was seeing the Erie Canal--visiting the route of my Fazakerly ancestors when they went from one end of New York to the other on their way to Chicago in the 1850's. These small towns and parks near and on the canal are beautiful and quaint.

Hope to make it back there again next summer.

Cousin,

Billie Fazakerly Harrison

Notes for NANCY PETOCCHI:

May 22, 2006

Dear Nancy:

I came across these messages in "HEALING WITH THE ANGELS" this morning. I believe both apply to you. I wanted to pass these along to you. I’m not all that religious—far from it--but sometimes messages have a way of hitting you between the eyes.

I especially liked The “Healing” message. A person doesn’t have to be a nurse or doctor to have the ability to heal others. All the work you do with the school children creating moments of pure joy and fun (a prescription for healing that is stronger than any drug ever made) then sharing that joy with the parents, teachers, and members of the community that get to hear your music through these children is enormously healing to yourself and many others. Nurses and doctors heal one-on-one; you heal many at a time.

I hope the good results of the tests or catching a potential problem very, very early can bring peace of mind to you soon.

Thank you for talking to me about this. It makes me feel special. I’m concerned, but feel in my gut that you are going to be fine regardless of the outcome of the tests.

You mentioned that you and John were going to Poughkeepsie, NY. A Fazakerley family group came from England to New York City and went to Albany, NY. A member of the family was in Poughkeepsie, NY for a while. One of the most beautiful trips I’ve ever made was going by train along the Hudson River from NYC to Albany. Incredible country. Much of New York State is incredible country. Enchanting.

Tell John hello. I am so glad Jimmy wanted to share his memories of Uncle Harry with John. I’ll be glad to read what he wrote. I always thought Uncle Harry was an extra special person. He was always so kind to me.

Love you both,

Billie

PS: Tell the eagle hello for us if you see him/her again. What a wonderful trip that was visiting you and John and seeing all the local sites.

HEALING WITH THE ANGELS; Oracle Cards, Guidebook, Doreen Virtue, Ph.D.; page 25; Publisher, Hay House, Inc., Carlsbad, CA

"Healing"

"Card Meaning: A situation that has caused you concern is on the mend. You are a natural Healer, and your healing thoughts have manifested into form."

Sometimes a situation cannot heal until you release the challange completely--so that healing light can enter it. Your worries will soon be over, because this card signifies that a healing has occurred. To realize this healing, however, you must first stop focusing on "what is wrong" and instead affirm: "Everything is in Divine and perfect order right now." You have natural healing abilities, and this card asks you to have faith that God works through you as an Earth healing angel. Hold thoughts of love around any situation that seems to need healing. Visualize the situation as healed right now. Then, give thanks to God for this healing, and completely release everything to the angels. The powerful effects of your healing work touch many lives. "

"Ideas & Inspiration"

"Card Meaning: Pay attention to new thoughts and ideas that come to you. They are seeds of magnificent co-creations with God."
