Descendants of Grandfather of Jesse Meshew

Generation No. 1

1.  GRANDFATHER OF JESSE1 MESHEW was born in Possibly France or Virginia.

Notes for GRANDFATHER OF JESSE MESHEW:

The original spelling for Meshew and other variations of this name is Michaux.  These French protestants (Huguenots) emigrated to many countries during the period of persecution when the king of France repealed the decree that had allowed religious and political freedom to the protestants.

These Frenchmen settled and established new homes in countries such as England, Germany, Holland, and America.

One theory is that our line of Meshews might be traced to the Meshews that settled on the James River in Virginia.  It's possible that Jesse may be a descendant of Abraham Michaux who migrated from France to Holland to England & then to Virginia; but this hasn't been proven yet.  There is proof, however, that Jesse was born in Goochland, Co., Virginia and migrated South to the Georgetown District, SC during the time of the Revolutionary war.

Note: Their was also a Michaux (Michaud) family that migrated from France to London then came to SC and settled in SC; but, no record has been found about a Michaux (Michaud) from this line coming from Goochland Co., VA.

Even though Jesse was in SC for a period of time, there doesn't appear to be any connection to this other Michaux (Michaud) family--but future records may prove otherwise.

Child of GRANDFATHER OF JESSE MESHEW is:

2.                i.    FATHER OF JESSE2 MESHEW, b. Born ?; Of Goochland Co., Virginia.

Generation No. 2

2.  FATHER OF JESSE2 MESHEW (GRANDFATHER OF JESSE1) was born in Born ?; Of Goochland Co., Virginia.

Notes for FATHER OF JESSE MESHEW:

Descendant of Abraham?

Father's Name spelled Michaux? Michau? Meshoe?

Jesse spelled the name Messhew

Jesse's son spelled the name Meshew

Son, Jesse, was born in Virginia, (probably the Goochland Co., area) according to Jesse's Pension documents.

Family Stories:

Jesse's father and three brothers fought in the Revolutionary War.

According to Ron Meshew, of NC, an expert on the Meshew geneaology:

Jesse served 5 or 6 "tours" with Francis Marion in the 1780's.

Marion's Brigade or Marion's Band of Patriots used "guerilla" tactics to try to hold on to any part of the South that they could.

Muster lists are virtually non-existent. The names mostly come from secondary sources.

Curiosity:

Items noted by Ron Meshew and other sources:

John "Mesho" was a witness for Jesse Mesho and Elizabeth Croxton Mesho land transactions in Lancaster, SC. (circa 1790-1795).

"there were land transactions that were witnessed by John Mesho and Charles Mesho" in Lancaster, SC.

"The 1800 census lists a John, Paul, and Agnis Mishoe or Michaux in Horry city."

(Horry Co. SC?)

Ron believes that the John Meshoe might be connected to Jesse somehow.

Jesse later moved to Tennessee (circa 1807) then on to Kentucky (circa 1809).

Michaux; Michau; Meshoe; Messhew; Meshew

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JESSE: Meaning of the name

1) Hebrew: Yishai

2) Biblically speaking: A Son of Obed, the son of Boaz and Ruth; Father of eight sons, the youngest of whom was David; a man of wealth and position at Bethlehem

3) "Jesse Tree" a genealogical tree represented in stained glass

4) "Tree of Jesse"; candlestick with many branches representing the descendants of Jesse

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Theory: Related to Abraham Michaux family that migrated from France to Holland to England to Virginia.

Various members of the family "migrated" to NC & SC

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Proven:

Information from the census records of 1820 and 1840 from Hickman County, Kentucky leads us to believe that Jesse's brothers were Charles, Lucas, and William. It is not known how Jesse's father and brothers participated in the war, but we have the following for Jesse.

According to his pension papers made in Hickman Co., Kentucky in 1834, Jesse was born in "Gouchlan", Goochland Co., Virginia in 1756; He was living in the Georgetown District, SC when he joined Francis Marion at Georgetown, SC. During the war he went to Charleston and helped build Fort Moultrie of Palmetto logs and sand. Jesse was there when Charleston fell to the British. He was at Fort Mott in the skirmish there. He took cattle South to the Savannah area to General Lincoln. He was in several skirmishes west of Horry County "in the swampy areas of north east SC". Jesse served several tours with Major, then later, General Francis Marion.  He was drafted once and volunteered every tour after that.

Military Service: A total of 2 years 3 months that took place periodically during the years of 1776-1781. He was discharged as a Private.

***Note: Originally, Fort Moultrie "was hastily constructed of Palmetto logs and sand to protect Charleston from attack." It was incomplete but  "The spongy palmetto and yielding sand easily absorbed shot and shell from the British ships" when they attacked June 28, 1776.  After a nine hour battle, the British ships were forced to retire.

***Note: Forte Mott, May 8-12, 1781; Jesse Messhew participated in this battle; Lee & Marion forced the British out by setting fire to the post.

After the war he moved to the "upper part" of South Carolina (Lancaster District) and lived there fifteen years. (He received a land grant from the SC governor in 1794.);  He then moved to Jackson Co., TN. And lived there about eighteen months.  Later he moved to Henderson Co., KY. And was there until 1821.  He moved in 1821 to Hickman Co., KY. when the "Jackson Purchase" area was first opened for settlers.

Fay Meshew Combs, a daughter of Ben Clarence Meshew, (son of James Newton Meshew, son of Benjamin Clarence, son of Jesse), wrote a letter to my grandmother, Gladys Meshew Finch. Fay believed that Jesse lived in the northern part of Hickman Co., KY. "for the power of attorney was witnessed by Jacob Corbett who became county clerk when Ballard County was formed in 1842."  His exact burial place is unknown but "probably in the area of the Hickman, Ballard, Carlisle Co. Lines".  Fay also believed that Millie Meshew, Jesse's daughter, married David Ramsey--this information coming from the Watts family.  The daughter's name listed as possibly Zilphia is questionable.  According to the 1850 census of Ballard Co., KY., an Elizabeth Meshew, 79, was living with a female,  Zilphia age 23.  Fay Combs believed Elizabeth was Jesse's widow but unsure what the relationship with Zilphia was. Jesse's first son's name is unknown; but the names and families of his other three sons, James Lewis, Benjamin C., and William E., have been verified.

Jesse:

1756; born Virginia; probably Goochland Co.

1780; Residing in the Upper Pee Dee River Country; enlisted with Francis Marion, Georgetown, SC

1790; abt. Married Elizabeth Croxton

1794; Land Grant in Lancaster Co, SC from SC Governor (probably out of Charlestown)

1800; Lancaster, SC Census; Jesse "Messhew", wife, 2 sons, 3 daughters.

1807; abt. Went to Jackson Co., Tennessee

1809; abt. Went to Kentucky

1810 Federal Census, Henderson, Henderson Co., KY, August 06,1810; Jesse Meshew

(If I am reading this correctly):

3 sons under age 10

1 son between 10-16

1 male 45 or older

1 female 10-16

1 female 16-26

1 female 26-45

1821; Moved to Hickman Co., KY when the Jackson Purchase Area opened to Settlers.

1834; War Pension Application: Hickman Co., KY

1835 Census, Hickman Co., Kentucky

William Meshew is listed:

1 mark under the 30 under 40 column, Male

1 mark under the 70 under 80 column, Male

1 mark under the 20 under 30 column, Female

This is probably William (30-40 age range) & Jesse (70-80 age range) and possibly William's 2nd wife (married 1832). William would have been about 31 in 1835; Jesse would have been about 79 in 1835.

Note from Billie: My relatives also descend from Benjamin C. Meshew, son of Jesse, through James Newton Meshew, brother of Francis Marion Meshew.  James Newton's son was Dr. Joshua White Meshew, my great grandfather, and an incredible and exemplary person. There are many, many Meshews.  In general a very handsome line of people; and, I consider myself fortunate to come from such an outstanding group of fine achievers.

Hopefully, future records will be found and prove this one way or another.

Jesse's son, William, named two of his sons James: (Thomas James & James B.)

Jesse's son, Benjamin Clarence had a son named James Newton

Notes for BENJAMIN CLARENCE MESHEW:

[FINCHM.FTW]

Benjamin is the third of Jesse's sons and not a lot is known about him personally except that he died before he reached middle age.

It is Benjamin's sixth child and son, James Newton Meshew, grandson of Jesse, that our line is linked to. James Newton Meshew was born (may 1844) after his father, Benjamin, died (1843).

After Benjamin died, his wife, Martha, remarried.

Notes from Howard J. Meshew, great grandson, Francis Marion Meshew to Billie Fazakerly Harrison, 5/23/2003:

"Charles Henry Meshew that you mention was a Lieutenant in the Confederacy then promoted to Captain. He was killed in June, 1864. He was a part of a special fighting group called the 'The Orphan Brigatd'. It was organized by General John Cabell Breckinridge. Special as one can get with just single shot guns and saber. James Newton Meshew was also a Lieutenant but survived and attended medical school. Somewhere I have heard that Charles was going to medical school before the war was, as was Francis Marion Meshew. If correct, 3 of 4 of Benjamin's sons were in Medical School."

Notes for WILLIAM E. MESHEW:

[FINCHM.FTW]

Our family are descendants of William's brother Benjamin C. Meshew, but I thought I would add the following information on William since it is available.

William E. Meshew had four wives.  The name of his first wife is unknown and no children are listed.

William's second wife was Elvira Piner Meshew and a date of 1832 is listed by her name--maybe a wedding date.  Her son Thomas James Meshew was born June 17, 1841--about nine years later. This is the only child listed.  Thomas died April 29, 1888 in Coleman, Texas.  Occupation unknown.  He wrote a brief "ancestor history" in a letter dated august 17, 1887 to his brother Charles; later it was copied and passed along by other relatives.  See enclosed "ancestor history". Thomas married Margaret Rennyson Meshew and they had one son: Thomas W. Rennyson meshew.

William's third wife was Ann Jones Meshew.  She died in 1853.  They had one daughter, Josephine, who died in infancy.

William's fourth wife was Maria Jane Lovins Meshew.  They had six children.  See family page on William for dates.

William's sixth son by Maria Jane Lovins Meshew was Robert Lee Meshew, and he married Ina Belle Jackson from Carlisle co., KY, and October 30, 1901. She was born September 09, 1880 and died may 14, 1964.  Bob and Ina were educated in Hickman Co., KY.  Bob attended Marvin college in Clinton, KY.  He was a miller (flour mill) and later a farmer.  Ina attended the Memphis conference female institute (now Lambeth college) in Jackson, TN.  They are buried at the Springhill Cemetery. They had six children.

Bob and Ina's fifth child, Maria Jane Meshew Watts--Mrs. John Watts--submitted papers to the DAR.  If these were accepted they may show that we are descendants of Abraham Michaux.

Notes for JAMES NEWTON MESHEW:

[FINCHM.FTW]

My great great grandfather.

James Newton Meshew

The following is a copy of material from Fay Meshew Combs.  Howard J. Meshew re-copied the original hand written copy since it was getting hard to read, and sent a copy to me in September, 1994.  It states:

"Enlisted C.S.A. at Tupelo, Mississippi, April 1861, 2nd lt. Co. F. 3rd Kentucky regiment (mounted infantry) became 1st lt. April 1864.  He was at battle of Guntown (after being sent to Kentucky in late April 1864 on a recruiting mission) where his brother Charles H. Meshew was killed on June 10th, 1864. (see p. 19, 111, and 121 of Ballards brave boys). Pg. 19-quote "two of the units assigned to Col. Tilghman and Lt. Col. Thompson in the 3rd KY. Reg. were from Ballard County.  One of these units was Co. F. of the 3rd under Capt. W. L. Stevenson, Lts. John Ashbrook, J.N. Meshew (James Newton Meshew) and T. J. O'donley and was a full company of men.  The other, Co. B of the 3rd which was known as the "Lovelaceville rifles" was recruited in July 1861, as a full company of men under Capt. J. H. Bowman and Lt. C. H. Meshew."

Another Source: Adjutant General's Report, pg. 112

Adjutant General of the State of KY Confederate KY Volunteers; War 1861-1865

Roll of Company F, Third Regiment Infantry (Mounted)

Captain: W.L. Stevenson; 1st Lieutenant: John Ashbrook; 2nd Lieutenant: J.N. Meshew; May 7, 1864; Tupulo, Mississippi

After the war, he returned to Ballard Co., KY to farm and study medicine at the University of Louisville (1872) and with Dr. George Stovall at Lovelaceville.

His children were born in Ballard County.

In 1874 he moved to Palma, Marshall Co., KY to practice medicine and died a year later in a typhoid epidemic. His oldest son, Joshua White Meshew, was about 13 years old at the time. Dr. James Newton meshew was buried in Lovelaceville along with two Meshew infants.

A list from the Ballard/Carlisle County cemeteries--vol. 3 (Lovelaceville Cemetery) shows the following:

"a-pg. #58 - Meshew, Jimmie Newton, b. 5/15/1844, d. 10/4/ 1875

 b-pg. #58 - Meshew, Jimmie Newton, b. 5/25/1876, d. 8/6/1876

        (Infant daughter of)

 c-pg. #58 - Meshew, Infant son of J.N. & M.E., b. 1866, d. 10/6/1867"

It would appear that they named one daughter "Jimmie" and that she was born after her father died of typhoid; and, then she died just months after her birth.

I never received any information on the infant son's death.  If the dates are copied correctly, the infant son was born the same year as their son Francis M. Meshew. There is no name given.  My grandmother had listed a child as Jessie Meshew that had died in infancy--perhaps this is the infant son mentioned above.

Times were truly hard for the meshew family at that time.  Dr. Meshew's wife, Martha Elizabeth continued to have a hard life after the loss of her husband and two children.

My grandmother, Gladys, wrote years ago that her father [Joshua white meshew] was very devoted to his father [James Newton Meshew] and admired him very much".

Even though he died at a somewhat young age, Dr. J. N.  Meshew certainly did leave a tremendous impression on the outstanding young man to follow in his footsteps.

Notes for MARTHA ELIZABETH WHITE:

[FINCHM.FTW]

Notes from Gladys Meshew Finch, daughter of Joshua White Meshew, MD, given to Billie Fazakerly Harrison, G-Daughter.:

"Martha Elizabeth White Meshew's parents were Joshua T. White (brother of Rev. Willis White) and Mary Jane Smith White (from Tennessee). Mrs. Meshew had a sister named Ophelia white, nicknamed  "Pea", from Lovelaceville.  Martha was born in Hickman Co., but later of Ballard co., Kentucky.

Martha Elizabeth Meshew, "Bettie", continued to run the farm after her husband's death with help from the boys (her sons) and with the advice of her brother- in-law, John Hamilton Rudolph.  He farmed and owned a store named "Hamburg" after his name.

My grandmother, Gladys Meshew Finch, said that grandmother Meshew "had two living sons and one daughter, but wasn't satisfied to live with anyone but 'Papa and Mama'.

She lived with her son, Joshua White Meshew, and his family for twenty years.  My grandmother also said that her grandmother had had a hard life. (The death of her husband at a young age; two infant deaths; one child born deaf having to attend a special school; another child becoming deaf from an injury and having to attend the same special school; and another one of her children committing suicide at age 21.)  The years she spent with her son Dr. Meshew must have been peaceful and a blessing for her.

In her older years, when she would come to the table to eat she would often say "I like potatoes!"

She liked to wash the dishes and it would hurt her feelings for anyone else to do this.  Martha Elizabeth Meshew crocheted and embroidered to entertain herself in her later years.  She was also known to be an extremely modest person.  As she got older, she would take long walks with another older lady, but this was dangerous since she had vertigo."

Mrs. Meshew appeared to be a very attractive lady even when she became elderly.  In 1921 she died of pneumonia at the age of 76 years.  She is buried in Barlow, KY near her son, Dr. Joshua White Meshew.

Further notes from Howard J. Meshew, 5/21/2002:

According to the Ballard-Carlisle history book, the Rev. Willis White was born in Halifax Co., NC 2/26/1805. He and his wife, Mary Wright, had 7 children. One a son, Judge James D. White. The Rev. lived to be 88 years old. One of his daughters, Mary Elizabeth Reeves b. 1844 married Dr. Charles Edward Hinkle 1/26/1864. Sounds like the Hinkles were marrying the Meshew, the Meshews marrying the Whites and the Whites were marrying the Hinkles."

Notes for DR. JOSHUA WHITE MESHEW:

[FINCHM.FTW]

My great grandfather.

The following notes were taken from a letter about Dr. Joshua White Meshew written after his death, 1926.

"acted wisely in remaining where he began his professional career"

"was a charter member of the Ballard County Medical Society"

"served for many years on his County board of Health"

"during the world war he served in the County board of examiners of enlisted men"

"officer in the bank of Barlow"

"active in the upbuilding of schools"

"communicant of the Methodist Church"

"served on year as Senior Vice President of the South Western Kentucky Medical Association"

"past Master of the Hazlewood Masonic Lodge No. 489, located at Barlow, Kentucky"

"It can be truthfull said of him, to know him was to love him."

"In the sacred precincts of the home, in the social circle, professional duties, in medical accociations, and elsewhere he was ever the same splendid courteous gentleman. We doubt not that had he known of the coming of the fatal stroke, our brother could have consistently said, 'I have fought a good fight, I have kept the faith, henceforth there is laid up for me a Crown of Righteousness.'"

Robert G. Hocker, Chr. Historian & Willis R. Moss & Chas. C. (Monroe?)

Copy of his eulogy written in 1926 by James F. Dale, a friend of the beloved and respected Dr. Joshua White Meshew.

In a lonely little forest some fifty years ago,

I saw a sturdy litle oak, and stopped to watch it grow.

I saw it grow to manhood, and spread its branches out,

Then on and on in rapture, out-classing those in sight.

I saw him then in med-life with branches towering high,

Far above the average oak of the forest standing by,

He sheltered us in sicknesss and brought us back to health,

He shared with us our sorrows, in poverty or in wealth.

I saw him then in old age, with branches bending low,

Laden with the many burdens of life's great cargo,

But on and on he bore them, with patience brave and true,

Till death, the Grim Reaper, his noble branches slew.

'Twas with sadness and with sorrow we heard the fatal crash,

But we knew in yonder for he'll outshine the rugged past.

This giant oak we speak of is one we all love true,

Our much beloved doctor, Josh White Meshew.

                                James F. Dale

Jean Meshew, Joshua White Meshew's grandson, wrote the following to me when I was requesting information on the Meshew family.

"...he built the first municipal water works in Western Kentucky, primarily as a preventive medicine measure.  He charged 50 cents a month for the water, which many did not pay.  Along came one of the financial "panics" of the time, and grandfather, in addition to his other charities, had co-signed notes for many people, which he had to make good when they couldn't pay.  He was ruined financially, and persuaded the city of Barlow to accept the water company as a gift, so that the remaining debt on it would be paid by the city.  He was 60 when he died.  He was on his way home from a house-call when he pulled his car over to the side of the road and stopped, having a heart attack."

This from Kerr's 'history of Kentucky':

"Doctor Meshew is a man who holds his friends in good account and likes to have them about him. He has great mental resourcefulness, and has accomplished surprising achievements, not only in his calling but in other lines.  Always holding the good of his community at heart, he has generously worked for it, and has found at Barlow his inspiration and congenial surroundings, which have aided him in his life work.  He is a man of personal charm, culture, and wide intellectual interests, and his fellow citizens are very proud of him and the principles for which he has always stood."

Notes for MATTIE MILDRED HINKLE:

[FINCHM.FTW]

I understand that the Hinkles were German--a letter from my aunt, Merle Bryan, in May 1976 mentioned that "the Hinkle brothers were run out of Germany as Catholic Priests collaborating with Martin Luther".

Also enclosed in this letter to me from my aunt was the following--sent to my grandmother in Dec. 1974 from Mildred (not sure which Mildred this is, possibly Effie's daughter)--"finally was able to get a copy of the Henckel genealogy.  Find that our great-great-great-great, etc. Anthony Jacob Henckel emigrated from Germany in 1717--settled in Germantown, Pennsylvania and was the founder of St. Michails Lutheran Church there.  I have traced our line back to the 10th child.  It has been interesting.  I would love to do the same with grandma Hinkle's father--the Clampetts--but don't know whether I'll ever get to it.  So much work involved."

Some of the Hinkles settled in Kentucky in a area called Hinkleville, (Ballard Co.). Hinkleville was supposedly named after Casper's son Charles (brother of George listed below).  As my grandmother explained--Hinkleville was a hamlet of about 100 people named after the family.

*** Mattie Mildred Hinkle Meshew's family:

Thomas George Hinkle: 12/23/1827-3/27/1889; born in Shelby Co., KY; died in Ballard Co., KY; buried: Pleasant Hill Methodist church cemetery, Hinkleville, KY; married: 12/05/1861 to Christina Jane Clampett.

"George" was a confederate soldier, enlisting in 1864; served in the CSA Company K, 7th mounted infantry under General Nathan Bedford Forrest. He died after "he contracted pneumonia after sitting on a stump while clearing land". His parents, Casper and Mildred Oglesby Hinkle could not read English. The "older grandchildren remember their grandmother Mildred Hinkle reading her German Bible while sitting in the warmth of the wood heated cook stove in the home of her son, George Hinkle, near Hinkleville, Kentucky."  George Hinkle died about a year before his daughter Mattie married Dr. Meshew.

***Christina Jane Clampett: 1/15/1844-7/1918; born in Summer Co., TN (sumner?) Another source says Shelbyville, Shelby Co., Kentucky--perhaps she was raised there); married in Shelby Co., KY; buried: Pleasant Hill Methodist church cemetery, Hinkleville, KY; "tena", her nickname, was the daughter of William Clampett and Martha Smith Clampett. They were German and her mother could not speak English. Tena was also considered "an exceptional woman for she took her oldest baby in her arms and rode horseback unaccompanied to Mississippi to visit her husband."

She was also considered to be somewhat of a "grandma Moses" but none of her work was saved.  She and George had 7 children.

1. Charles Hendrick Hinkle 4/20/1863-4/6/1949 (Charles) never married; born: Hinkleville, KY; buried: Pleasant Hill Methodist church cemetery Hinkleville, KY

2. Thomas George Hinkle 4/18/1866-11/14/1922 (Thomas) never married; born: Hinkleville, KY; buried: Pleasant Hill Methodist church cemetery

3. Mattie Mildred Hinkle Meshew (Mattie)

4. Bettie Johnson Hinkle Terrell 7/29/1870-1947 (Bettie); married: Joseph Zackery Terrell, Jr. 5/4/1892; five children: Ronald Earl Terrell 6/10/1893-9/11/1977 (I have no info on the other four children); buried: Pleasant Hill Methodist church cemetery

5. Effie Lee Hinkle Hines 12/11/1872-7/21/1957 (named for Robert E. Lee); teacher: taught in a one room school in Ballard Co. for years; married: George Everett Hines 12/31/1903;  three children: twins: Maurice Everett Hines & Thomas Marion Hines 4/7/1906 and Mildred Hines Borgman 7/13/1908; buried: Pleasant Hill Methodist church cemetery

6. Ida Casper Hinkle Bondurant 12/23/1876-9/2/1945 (Ida); married: James Marshall Bondurant 8/2/1900; six children: Marguerite Bondurant Samples 7/6/1901-5/24/1984; Tom Marshall Bondurant 9/22/1904-11/22/1904; Hinkle Roy Bondurant 2/8/1906; James Henry Bondurant 12/17/1909; baby stillborn 1012 (1912?); Gordon Rex Bondurant 1/4/1916-3/5/1985; buried; Pleasant Hill Methodist church cemetery

7. Frances Etta Hinkle Hines 12/13/1881-1956 (Fan or Fannie) married/divorced: James L. Hines; one daughter (name unknown); (daughter may have been Majorie Hines Rapier; 1908-1950 and buried in the Old Lacenter cemetery near her mother); buried: Pleasant Hill Methodist church cemetery (believe this is the burial place of James Hines)

My grandmother, Gladys Meshew Finch, said that she stayed with grandma Hinkle often and was 'Tena's' favorite grandchild until Aunt Fan separated from her husband and brought her baby daughter to live with them. She said that her grandmother Hinkle was the best cook to her knowledge.  An excellent cook. She also said "uncle Tom always called me 'Miss Woman' and called brother [Josh] 'Preacher'.  He was a 'kid spoiler'."

My grandmother also said she never saw either of her grandfathers. There were pictures of both of them , but they burned with "our" house in 1910. (Not sure which home she was referring to.)

Notes for FRANK CECIL MESHEW:

[FINCHM.FTW]

Some of the information I received about Uncle Frank came from Jean Hinkle Riley from Paducah, Kentucky.  The info came from her genealogy of the Hinkle family.  I have found several errors as to dates and the spelling of names.  She had uncle frank's middle name spelled "Crice" instead of Cecil--also aunt Evelyn's middle name spelled as Blaha, which I think might be Black. I don't know if that is correct or not.  Anyway, I apologize for any errors made on my part from info taken from this source.

According to Joyce Meshew Girard, Frank's niece,  "Uncle Frank isn't a big letter writer, he just won't write!".

To talk to Uncle Frank, one had to call him--and ask questions fast and move on to the next question quickly.  He was helpful with my requests on the information I needed, which I appreciated very much.

Notes for GLADYS CHRISTINE MESHEW:

[FINCHM.FTW]

Source: Billie Fazakerly Harrison, daughter of Martha Louise Finch Fazakerly, daughter of Gladys Christine Meshew Finch:

I have been blessed in many ways, but in one outstanding way more than others. I came from a family of wonderful cooks.  Among the best was Nanny.  Eating her food was always a treat and an experience to look forward to--no matter what she made.  Whether it was a piece of left over home made light bread, sliced and made into toast for breakfast or a feast at thanksgiving or Christmas, it was usually exceptional.  And to grow up in this environment and take all this for granted!  What a surprise it was for me when I started housekeeping myself--so much work!  I'm very thankful that I got to watch Nanny prepare the food she made and that I have some of her best recipes to go by.

While working on the Fazakerly family tree, Chris, my brother suggested that I make a section on "Nanny's recipes".  He said that he would love to taste her homemade light bread one more time before he died.  I tried to make some this last Christmas and it was o.k., but it didn't taste quite like Nanny's.  I believe her secret was adding extra yeast--more than called for in most recipes.

NANNY'S RECIPES:  (along with a few explanations from Billie)

Boiled custard

(This is the clearest and easiest way to follow this recipe--mama's explanation)

Heat one quart of milk in a double boiler.  When hot add the well-beaten yolks of three eggs diluted with 1/2 cup cold milk.  Beat the whites to a stiff froth, adding a pinch of salt.  When well beaten, add a cup of sugar and beat until perfectly smooth.  Then slowly add to the heated milk and cook till it thickens.  Add a teaspoon of vanilla when cold.  By beating the sugar into the egg whites, the custard is made creamy all through.

Banana pudding

2 c. Milk

2 eggs separated

3 tbs. Flour

1/2 c. Sugar

1 tsp. Vanilla

Pinch salt

Bananas (3)

Cookies (vanilla wafers)

Mix flour and sugar and salt in 1/2 cup cold milk.  Heat;  then add egg yellows (which have been beaten in the rest of the milk. This is important).  Stir until thick. Add vanilla.

Let the mixture cool before pouring over the bananas. (or the bananas will have a cooked taste).  Can use a small whip to ensure smoothness. To make juicy add 1/c cup more milk.  For a larger pudding, use 3 cups milk, 3 eggs, 2/3 cup sugar.

Meringue

Oven 350 degrees or 475 to 500 degrees if you only want to brown the top of meringue quickly. Watch closely.

2 egg whites (large eggs) or 3 medium sized eggs. Have them at room temperature. (i believe this is the trick to making good meringue.)

1/4 tsp. Cream of tatar  (optional)

4 tbs. Sugar or 6 tbs. If use three eggs

1/2 tsp. Vanilla

Beat the egg whites until stiff; add cream of tartar; slowly add sugar; then vanilla

Coconut cake

Duncan hines white cake deluxe baked in two layers (9 inch round or square pans)

Fill with divinity filling or powdered sugar filling.

Put a mixture of crushed pinapple, coconut, and a tablespoon of mashed bananas between layers.  Put juice of pinapple on top layer before icing.  Ice and apply coconut.

Pineapple upside down cake

This works great in a cast iron skillet

Melt stick oleo in skillet

Sprinkle 1/4 cup brown sugar over butter

Top and dot about the contents of a small can of crushed pinapple on the butter and sugar mixture--use juice and pinapple. (you can also use pinapple rings with a cherry in the middle)

1/2 cake mix (duncan hines) prepared according to instructions on box and pour over above mixture.

Bake in a 375 degree oven.

Jam cake

1/2 cup of butter or margarine

1 and 1/2 c. Sugar

3 eggs well beaten

2 c. Flour

1/2 c. Buttermilk

1 tsp. Soda

1 tsp. Cinnamin

1/2 tsp. Cloves

2 cups jam

Cream butter and sugar thoroughly.  Add eggs.  Sift together flour, soda, spices and add to first mixture, alternating with buttermilk.  Add jam last. Pour into 9 inch round pans.

Bake in 350 degree oven for 35 minutes.

Fried pies (one of Gramps' all time favorites, bfh)

Package evaporated peaches, apples, or apricots.

For peaches, cover with water, stew until very tender. (watch them--they will burn easily)

Mash with potato masher

Add one cup sugar and cook until the sugar dissolves.  Can add nutmeg or cinnamin. Allow to cool before you make the pies.

Canned biscuit do not make good pies.

Make a basic biscuit dough. Knead your dough on a floured bread board until it isn't sticky.  Cut out biscuit and roll biscuit thin to about size of a saucer.  Until you get the hang of it i wouldn't try more than 8 at one time.  Have your shortening hot in a small skillet or electric fry pan.  You can cook four at a time in it.  Have all your biscuit rolled out and peaches inside--about a tablespoonful.  Too much of the peaches run out and spoil the grease.  Press the edges of the dough together with a fork or your fingers.  Have shortening about 1/2 inch deep in pan.  Turn once.  I use a fork and turner to turn mine. I stick my pies with a fork all around as soon as i drop them in the hot skillet.

Fry at 400 degrees.  Don't have peaches too juicy.

Peanut butter fudge (another of Gramps' favorites; my son's as well, bfh)

2 cups sugar

2 tablespoons karo syrup

1/4 teaspoon salt

2/3 cup of milk

Large hunk of peanut butter--about the size of an egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

Cook all of the above ingredients (except the peanut butter and vanilla) until it forms a soft ball in water. (use a clean teaspoon each time you dip into the syrup and drip into cool water in cup and try to form  soft ball with finger)

Take off stove--add peanut butter and vanilla--set in cold water--and beat until thick and grainy.  Pour into greased platter quickly.  Cut when cool.  (if you add the peanut butter at the beginning, it may scorch.)

Buttermilk corn bread

1 cup buttermilk

1/2 tsp. Salt

1 tablespoon sugar

1/2 tsp. Soda (level)

1 tsp. Baking powder (level)

1 egg

Meal for consistency--add meal last--at least a cup--mix should be "pourable", not thick.

Pour into pre-heated hot skillet with melted. Hot grease in it.

Bake at 375 to 400 degrees for about 30 minutes.

Dressing

Fresh cornbread

Equal amount of light bread (loaf)

Onion

Two eggs

Celery leaves

Salt, pepper, sage, to taste

Soften with chicken broth

Use potato masher for smooth texture

Put in greased pan and pour more broth over the contents.

Bake until brown. (Perhaps 30 to 45 minutes)

Hot water cornbread or "doughty" boys

2 cups water

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup sugar

1 and 1/4 cups self rising corn meal

Bring water, salt, and sugar to a boil. Turn off heat.  Add meal and stir until thick-- consistency to make patties. (mixture will be hot.  Use cool running water to cool hands in between making patties.)

Fry at moderate heat.  Do not use deep fat for frying.  About 1/4 inches deep in skillet or griddle.

"Cracklin" or Crackling bread (this recipe is one of a kind, pure joy to eat, bfh)

Use above recipe (hot water corn bread) and add about half of a pound package of cracklings.  If cracklings are large, I grind them.  Make into larger patties than doughty boys  (hot water corn bread), about 3 times as large.  Bake at 400 degrees until brown.

Nanny's home made light bread (good luck! I've never known anyone to make it taste like hers, bfh)

Sift about 11 cups of regular flour into a mixing bowl and make a hole in the flour to put other ingredients in.  Then add:

1 tablespoon salt

1/2 cup sugar

2 tablespoons crisco

2 and 1/2 cups warm water

1 cake fleischman's yeast dissolved in 1/2 cup water (warm).  {when nanny made this  bread she doubled the amount of yeast to two cakes or two packs of yeast.  She saidthis helped to make the bread rise faster---but i also believe this was the secret to her incredible bread.  The extra yeast made it taste better.}

Mix. Turn out on floured board and knead until it isn't sticky.  This makes two skilletfulls.  (black iron skillets)  have pans greased.  Turn dough in pans to grease the top.  Allow to rise double size--about one to two hours--depending on the amount of yeast.   Bake at 375 degrees.  Don't use self-rising flour.  Powdered yeast is about as good as the cake and keeps better.  You might have better luck to half the recipe until you get the hang of it.

Relish (salad)

Chop together (fine)

Onion

Bell pepper

Ripe tomato

Cucumber

Add salt, pepper, sugar, and vinegar to taste.  Serve with peas and other vegetables. (Mimi's recipe called for apple vinegar and celery or celery seed and a red onion.)

Hash

Nanny was a wonderful grandmother.  She never raised her voice or lost her temper with me.  The look on her face would speak volumes.  You instantly knew if you were out of line.  She could be very strict but never unkind.  She was a very patient and calm person; and a good teacher, whether she was showing me how to make doll clothes or showing me how to crochet or helping me with my math and Latin lessons. She once told me that she thought she was sometimes slow.  She was never slow; just very methodical and consistent, and careful about any task she had to do. I always enjoyed being with Nanny.  I especially remember that she was always very well dressed.  I believe her mother enjoyed nice clothes and all the early pictures of Nanny and Aunt Merle and their mother show beautiful and some rather elaborate outfits.  Nanny was also fond of costume jewelry, in particular--long bead necklaces and butterfly pins.  She was proud to be from Kentucky and she enjoyed watching and listening to basketball games.  Teaching was her life--it was often a relief and comfort to her to be able to leave her problems behind and go teach--she was very dedicated--maybe at times too dedicated but she taught for 35 years and dearly loved her profession.  She told me that when she and Gramps started out, she would read their lessons out loud to him in order for them to prepared for their classes each day--it must have been a good way from home to school. [My guess is that she already had her lessons ready and was helping him with his. bfh]

She never traveled from home much, but she came to visit me twice with Bobby in Galveston, Texas after my children were born.  After this she went with Mimi and Mama to Kentucky for a visit, and on the way home, slipped and fell in a restroom-- but wasn't hurt badly--just bruised. However, the episode scared Mimi and Mama so much that they each had to take tranquilizers.  After this Mimi didn't want nanny to travel again. (It was too hard on Mimi's nerves!)
