NEW KENT COUNTY, VA - CENSUS - (Taken from 1782 LAND Tax list)

Title:  Heads of families at the first census of the United States taken in

the year 1790. Records of the state enumerations, 1782 to 1785.

        City of Publication: Washington

        Publisher:              G.P.O.

        Date:           1908

        Page Count:             193

        Notes:          At head of title: Department of Commerce and

Labor, Bureau of the Census, S.N.D. North, director.

Includes index.

The First Census of the United States (1790) comprised an enumeration of the

inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky,

Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North

Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and

Virginia.

A complete set of the schedules for each state, with a summary for the

counties, and in many cases for towns, was filed in the State Department, but

unfortunately they are not now complete, the returns for the states of

Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Virginia having been

destroyed when the British burned the Capitol at Washington during the War of

1812. For several of the states for which schedules are lacking it is probable

that the Director of the Census could obtain lists which would present the

names of most of the heads of families at the date of the First Census. At the

census of 1790 the state of Virginia was returned with a population of

747,160, leading, by more than 300,000, Pennsylvania, the second state of the

Union in point of population at the First Census. The loss of Virginia's

original schedules for the First and Second censuses is so unfortunate that

every endeavor has been made to secure data that would in some measure fill

the vacancy. The only records that could be secured were some manuscript lists

of state enumerations made in the years 1782, 1783, 1784, and 1785; also the

tax lists of Green-brier county from 1783 to 1786. These documents were on

file in the State Library and could not be removed there from. Through the

courtesy of the State Librarian and the members of the Library Board, an act

was passed by the legislature allowing the Census Office to withdraw the lists

for the purpose of making copies and publishing the names, in lieu of the

Federal census returns. The counties for which the names of the heads of

families are returned on the state census lists are 39 in number, and

contained in 1790 a population of 370,000; 41 counties with 377,000 population

are lacking; this publication covers, therefore, only about one-half of the

state.

Other Finches of New Kent, Virginia; Distant relatives??? I believe the following are descendents of our Thomas Finch of New Kent Co., Va.

There was another EDWARD FINCH that died in 1823, DAVIDSON CO., NORTH CAROLINA. (See note below. Our Edward Finch died 1831 DAVIDSON CO., TN)

Edward's wife was NANCY RICHARDSON. His parents were listed as JOHN HESTER FINCH & MARY WILLIAMSON.

It stated John Hester Finch was b. 1718, NEW KENT, VIRGINIA & died GRANVILLE CO., NORTH CAROLINA;

John Hester Finch's parents were HENRY FINCH & ANN HESTER;

Henry Finch's father was EDWARD FINCH, b. 1664, NEW KENT CO., VA; Edward's wife was MARTHA;

(I believe it is possible that this Henry is the brother of our Edward, both sons of Edward & Martha Finch of New Kent VA. Their grandfather was our Thomas that came here in 1663. It appears that one died in Davidson Co, NC and one died Davidson Co., TN; bfh, Finch Ancestor)

Note: "North Carolina's state boundary line originally extended all the way to the Mississippi River. In 1777, Washington County was created by the North Carolina Legislature and encompassed all of what is now the state of Tennessee. In 1783, the North Carolina Legislature created Davidson County in what is now Middle Tennessee from a portion of Washington County".

Also:

"In 1788, North Carolina created "Tennessee County", the third county to be established in what is now Middle Tennessee. (Tennessee County was the predecessor to current-day Montgomery County). Earlier in Nov. 2006 I had found the above entry when I had listed all the Finches I could find in TN, KY, NC, & VA. Edward was just one name among many names that I had collected. This was before I knew we were targeting "Edward" which came about when Evelyn Finch Green made the correction of John Edward Finch's name from our mistaken entry of John Emanuel Finch. So thanks to Allen Leitherland, Evelyn Finch Green and Dennis of Union City, Obion Co., TN, we are now able to trace our line back to Edward Finch.

E-mail from Allen Leitherland, Nov. 28, 2006

The search is finished!

"Ms. Billie Mr. Dennis asked me to come to the library in Union City last Friday because he said he had a supprise for me.

We now have it.

Amos' father was Edward Finch of Brunswick Co. Va. ( I'm sick and don't have my notes but I had to come to the funeral home to email you about this.I have to get a computer at home.)

Anyway, Edward died in 1831 in Davidson Co. Tn. He left a wife Jensey (or Tenney) and several children 6 or 7 to be exact. I have all their names and who they married at home and will get them to you tomorrow or the next day just try to take this in for now.

We know that Edward is the father because Jensey or Tenney as she was called is on the 1840 census in Gibson county 4 or 5 miles from the Obion County line.

Now stay with me , Edward died in Davidson Co. and in his will named Jensey and children as heirs.

(this couldn't be amos' tennie in 1840 she wasn't born yet and it makes sense for him to nickname his first born after a parents nickname. Oh, and Jensey Nanney who married Edward Finch in Va. her fathers first name was Amos.....)

Now Jensey "Tenney" wife of Edward lived in gibson county in 1840 next to William Finch ( another son ) and 4 or 5 Tyson's. The road that is the oldest in gibson county is Tyson Store / Mason Hall Rd. (half the road is in gib co. and half in obion co. ) Alexander has 2 infant children buried at the North Union Cemetery almost on the county line off of Tyson Store /M. H. Rd. So the fact that Jensey was married to  Edward who named her in his will in Davidson co. in 1831 then moved to Gibson county by 1840 and lived next to Wm. and alexander (2 oldest boys) and died before 1850 in Gibson Co. Another fact is that Tyson rd. crosses Morella which goes to Davenport (now Trimble ) in Dyer co. (only about 5 or 6 mi. to Dyer co. line). We know that Amos married Susan A. Pierce and we also Know Susans father, her and 5 bro. and sis. were in Davenport at this time.

In the census in 1840 it has Tenney as having 2 sons living with her. (Amos and John W.)

This fits because I found where in 1857 Alexander was the executor of John W. 's and he left things to Tenney, Amos, Alexander, Rebecca, Sarah Etc..(found the document on micro film at obion co.)

I think their mother died around 1845 and amos moved to dyer co. and is on the dyer co. census in 1850.

We know he lived next to John Pierce in 1850 in Davenport.

 Then he married around 1846 had Tennie & John then moved to obion co.

Even in obion county he is still less than 9 miles from where he started out on Tyson Store Rd. I think Haywood has a write up on the road in the Masn history book.

Let this soak in and I will email you tomorrow.

I am going to send you hard copies of all the work with in a day or so.

In a few days I will tell you and prove that I have this line of Finches back to 1665......

Once I found Edward from BRUNSWICK COUNTY VA. it was like taking a broken chain and putting in a link that connected the whole thing. Tennessee--VA--England."

"I will say this Thomas Finch came to New Kent Co. VA. in 1665 or so. and Mr. John Sands has it traced back--it took him 10 years he said, but you have to know where to look to find the connection.."

Take Care ,

Allen

Ms. Billie I talked with Evelyn last night, she had to be put into the hospital.

I'm sorry to hear that she is ill. Hope she is able to get by this quickly.

I'm glad she was able to straighten out John Emanuel and John Edward Finch.

We had a great Thanksgiving holiday with my daughter in Charleston, SC. It was a nice break for us. Hope you and your family had a great time as well.

I'll try to look for Edward Finches now. I keep changing directions with these names!

Were you able to read the Gibson Co., court deeds?

Was John M. Finch actually John W. Finch?

I guess the A W Finch was Alexander. John M or W Finch must be a brother, or cousin, or uncle? What do you think?

Billie

I found the following for Dyer Co., TN

I am curious about Obediah Finch. At first I thought he was Alexander's brother, but now I'm not sure. He may be the son of the Elizabeth Finch mentioned. I'm sure they are related to our line, but I don't know how yet. We don't know who Elizabeth's husband was.

Finch Ancestor

Dec. 04, 2006

Other Finches of New Kent, Virginia; Distant relatives??? I believe the following are descendents of our Thomas Finch of New Kent Co., Va.

There was another EDWARD FINCH that died in 1823, DAVIDSON CO., NORTH CAROLINA (not Davidson Co., TN). Edward's wife was NANCY RICHARDSON. His parents were listed as JOHN HESTER FINCH & MARY WILLIAMSON.

It stated John Hester Finch was b. 1718, NEW KENT, VIRGINIA & died GRANVILLE CO., NORTH CAROLINA; John Hester Finch's parents were HENRY FINCH & ANN HESTER;

Henry Finch's father was EDWARD FINCH, b. 1664, New Kent, VA; Edward's wife was MARTHA;

(I believe this Henry is the brother of our Edward, sons of Edward & Martha of New Kent VA. Their grandfather was our Thomas that came here in 1663.)

Source: IGI; LDS Records; Pedigree Resource File; sources were not listed here--perhaps they are listed on the CD.
