English Catholics

Papists Rolls

Note about Papist Rolls: The first Jacobite rebellion resulted in the passing of the Act of 1George chapter 55 (1715), which required every papist to register his name and details of his real property with the Clerk of the Peace, to be subscribed personally or by attorney at Quarter Sessions

Papist Rolls:
(There are 12 Rolls)

Catholics had a pretty hard time in the 17th and 18th centuries. Religious services were illegal, they were prevented from educating their children except in their own homes, and they were disallowed from inheriting or purchasing land. They were taxed very heavily.
An Act was passed in 1715 requiring all papists to register their names and real estates (it made taxing them a bit easier)

Liverpool Records Office:

"I have checked our records and it seems the first Roman Catholic parish
records come from St Mary's, Highfield Street, which although founded in
1707 did not start producing records until 1741 (births only from this
date).
This would imply that Catholics had to use Anglican facilities like St
Nicholas church on the Pierhead."

Or, indeed, All Saints or St Michaels at Garston?

Another Papist Estate Roll:

Thomas Fazakerley of Garston 1717
"Mess[uage] and te[nements] in garston with closes called the Yord, Backside, Edgendales Moores, Dale Butt, garthland Hey, Holme, High Field, Clay Looanes, Green Ground, Alerton Croft, and 1 r[ood] in the Marsh Field held from Thomas Norris, esq., 27 Sep 1689, for lives of self, wife Mary and son Edward at 23 s 10d rent, 2 hens, 1 capon and usual boons"
(Malcolm Hulme's ancestor)

"St Michaels (First Church) fell into disrepair during the Civil War and by
1650 it was in ruins. Edward Norris of Speke Hall rebuilt it in 1707 (Second
Church), so there's a chance that some records remain.
The Norris family owned a lot of land in Childwall parish, just 8 miles from
Liverpool. Interesting that my Thomas held lands in Garston on rent from
Thomas Norris.

Nearby Garston Hall (demolished in the 1880's) was held by Sir William
Gerard. It is believed that clandestine worship took place in a Roman
Catholic Chapel within this building - Thomas was recorded as a Papist."

1705 Return of Papists
"A couple of references from the 1705 Return of Papists. Not entirely accurate I would suggest. Some parishes failed to make a return. Returns from years before and after this date list a great many more Fazakerley's than appear here."
Parish of Sephton
Netherton
Wm Fazakerly and 2 children (listed as 'poor')
A later note states:
"Very few of these in ye said Parish of SEPHTON exceed £30 or £40 p Ann, many have much to do to live, & pay Taxes & their Dues, & not a few are so poor yt they live by their Neighbour's Charity."

Parish of Ormskirk
Township of Ormskirk
Robt Fazakerly Esqr.
