Introducing: Stephen Cook

A Methodical Personal Search for His Ancestors
Careful Research Involving the Inclusion & Exclusion of Family Lines
Compiled Correspondence in Installment Form

The May/June 2001 issue of Ancestry had two articles that reminded me of Stephen Cook’s careful pursuit of facts in researching his Fazakerley ancestors: The Life and Deaths of John Parker by Stephen K. Parker and Information, Evidence & Proof by Donn Devine.

How do you know if you have the right connection? Stephen stated: I have found particularly with the Fazakerleys that elimination of some branches is as often as useful as the inclusion of others.” Stephen’s line goes back to his Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather, Richard Fazakerley. The following material is of correspondence by mail in several installments.

The material gets repetitive in places from installment to installment, but it needs to be in order to follow the logical train of sequences. I was particularly impressed with Stephen’s description of places and distances. For example: “There is an Oldhall Street in Liverpool near the terminus of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal” and “Carruthers Street is still in existence and ran alongside a short spur of the Leeds Liverpool Canal”. For someone from South Carolina, these descriptive nuggets are a great help. Stephen’s mother, age 80, is helping with the research. Her comments could be considered the glue that holds all this together.

Stephen’s Introduction

Dear Reader:

What follows is my research of 4 Fazakerley sisters one of whom was my G.G. Grandmother. When they married the Fazakerley name was pruned from my family tree.

I would like to thank my mum for getting me involved in genealogy and for her many reminiscences and family stories.

My thanks to Billie for all the effort and time she devotes to the Fazakerley Database and for her continued interest and support in my endeavors.

I hope the following will help you eliminate some of the following Fazakerleys from your research and may encourage you to offer your information for the benefit of all.

If you recognize any relations or can offer additional information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Good Hunting
Stephen

Hello Billie

At last the opportunity to send the first installment of my Faz research. I can see that you have not been idle these last few days. New searches appearing on your FazDB (Fazakerley Database) or even BDB (Billie's Database) almost on a daily basis. I haven't had enough time to really check the FDB against my records, a pleasure I am looking forward to.

Anyway my researches commenced about a year ago to the day and were triggered by the death of my mothers elder sister. My mother thus became the only left of her generation and obviously thoughts turned to family history. I knew a bit about the family from previous discussions, however after taking some notes and attempting to construct a tree of the relatives my mum could remember I suggested we go to Halsall Churchyard to have a look around. She knew some of the older generations lived and were buried there.

It was only right at the end of our searches of the gravestones in the churchyard that we found a gravestone laid into the grass, overgrown with moss and lichen:

1 Richard Fazakerley died Sept 15 1871 aged 29 years
2 Also of “Authur” Grandson of above who died 18/11/1887 Aged [unreadable]
3 Also William Kenny who died May [unreadable] Died 2 years
4 Also William Kenny father of the above who died Feb? [unreadable] 1922?
5 Also Mary Jane beloved wife [unreadable] Who died Dec [unreadable] Aged 8-?

My mum recognized these as:
1 Richard Fazakerley her Great Grandfather who she knew died very young in a fatal accident.
2 As the illegitimate son of Ellen Fazakerley daughter of the Richard above. As “Authur” is "not" a Fazakerley family name I believe him to be named after his father who was a farmer in Halsall.
3 William Kenny. I can remember my grandmother [who's mother was Mary Jane Fazakerley another of the daughters of
Richard above] telling me that she had had an elder brother called William who died as a baby
4 William Kenny husband of Mary Jane Fazakerley from 3
5 Mary Jane Fazakerley my mother's grandmother.

So adding my mother's other two Aunts gave Richard Fazakerley Married to Margaret (my mum knew her forename). They had 4 daughters: Ellen, Susannah, Margaret, Mary Jane

I checked the 1871 Census and found in Small Lane, Halsall:
Richard Fazakerley Head of Household 28; Engine Driver Threshing Machine; Margaret Wife 32; Ann daughter [9?] Mary Jane daughter 9; Margaret daughter 4; Ellen daughter 1; James Cave brother in law 22 Ag labourer

This confirmed Margaret's maiden name as Cave. Susannah would not have been born before 1871. Also it is more than likely that the fatal injury Richard sustained to his legs was as a result of slipping into the threshing machine. Sadly and horrifically this was not uncommon.

I checked the 1881 Census and found at Small Lane. Halsall:
Thomas Clare Head 63 Farm Labourer; Margaret Clare Wife 40; Ann Cave Stepdaughter 19 Unmarried; Margaret Fazakerley Stepdaughter 13 Scholar; Ellen Fazakerley Stepdaughter l1 Scholar; Susannah Fazakerley Stepdaughter 9 Scholar; Thomas Clare Son 3

And at Renacres Farm, Halsall, Renacres Lane:
John Hesketh Head of Household; John Cave 15 Farm Labourer; Mary Jane Fazakerley 16 Domestic Servant

My mother knew that when Richard Fazakerley died, Margaret, his wife remarried Thomas Clare.

Thus all the above, with the possible exception of dates of birth in the Census records, is sound history. I appreciate that you can refute anything and I would except that everything that I have researched after this varies from nearly absolute confirmation to speculative. That is, I am always ready to re-examine any of my conclusions.

Thus I eventually checked the IGI for the 4 sisters born (roughly about): Mary Jane 1865; Margaret 1868; Ellen 1870; Susannah 1872

1 found in the IGI the following reasonable matches all with parents Richard and Margaret Fazakerley: Mary Jane 1865 Jan 22 Halsall, Christening; Margaret 13 Jan 1867 Halsall, Christening; Ellen 23 May 1869 Halsall, Christening; Susannah 10 Nov 1871 Halsall, Christening

I also found the following gravestone in Halsall Churchyard:
1] Ann Wife of Benjamin Cave died 5 November 1856 (44)
(1, Margaret's mother who was formerly Ann Snape from a huge family of canal boat men
2] Also of the above Benjamin Cave January 17 1873 (66)
    (2, Margaret's father: Benjamin Cave)
3] And Margaret wife of Thomas Clare died March 4 1917 (78)
(3, Margaret whose first husband was Richard Fazakerley)

My mum gave me the following spouses for the 4 Fazakerley sisters: Mary Jane married William Kenny; Margaret married John Lloyd; Ellen married William Roughley, no children; Susannah married John Lunt

This seems to be an appropriate place to stop having established Richard and Margaret and the 4 daughters.

I can add the following information from BMD Certificates I have purchased. I won't give all the details but will send you photocopies instead:
Birth: Richard Fazakerley 10 November 1842 born to Mary Fazakerley [formerly Johnson] and Richard Fazakerley, Water Man (which I believe is synonymous with Boatman)

Marriage: 28 December 1863 Richard Fazakerley [father Richard Fazakerley Waterman] and Margaret Cave [father Benjamin Cave Labourer] Witnesses Robert and Catherine Cave
Marriage: 24 September 1838 Benjamin Cave {no father given??} and Ann Snape [father Robert Snape boatman] Witnesses Edward Goulbourn [Billie do you recognise this name??? I have only just made a possible connection myself with looking at the certificate again] and Margaret Snape.

I appreciate you reading through this, it has certainly been useful to lay it out as a story like this.

Thanks once more for your generosity in placing all your valuable research at everyone's disposal. I know some people who regard their family history as private property, what a shame.

Best Wishes
Stephen

Hi Billie

Thanks for the recent e-mail and for your kind words regarding my researches. I suppose having a scientific training and working with databases and spreadsheets does mean that I am rather particular over data in general.

As mentioned before I think it is important to state what level of confidence you have in the data one quotes. For instance the 4 Fazakerley daughters of Richard can be readily and confidently eliminated from many Fazakerley researchers' lists of possibles.

I shall send the next installment at the weekend when I have time to sit and put everything in order with evidence.

I have been searching your database over the last week and have found some wonderful supporting evidence.

Please feel free to add the information I send to your database.

Best wishes and goodbye for the moment.

Installment Three

Hello Billie

Here is the next installment of my researches into my Fazakerley branch and twigs.

Having established that Richard Fazakerley and Margaret Cave were the parents of Susannah, Margaret, Ellen and Mary Jane Fazakerley my thoughts turned to a comment my mother remembered Mary Jane making.

I should explain that my mum lived with her parents and her grandmother Mary Jane Faz and that the three other sisters either lived locally or visited on a regular basis.

My mum recalls a woman, called Aunt Polly, visiting her grandmother in Ormskirk. Grandmother referred to this woman as Aunt Polly and remarked that it was strange having an aunt only 3 years difference in age from oneself!!! A potentially great clue.

The visits by Aunt Polly usually coincided with market day, which was and still is on a Thursday (there is a Saturday Market also). Polly came from Maghull by bus and was treated as a special visitor.

Polly in the Fazakerley side of my family is reserved for someone called Mary or Mary Jane. Similarly Susannah was known as Susie;  Margaret as Maggie; and Ellen as Nellie.

After several false starts becoming misled by various Fazakerleys in Maghull I searched the 1881 Census and came across the following entry with which I am sure you are familiar:
Dwelling: 53 Benledi St, Census Place: Liverpool, Lancashire, England Source: FHL Film 1341862 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 3599 Folio 62 Page 15, Marr Age Sex Birthplace:
Mary FAZAKERLEY W 58 F Halsall Relationship: Head
John FAZAKERLEY U 20 M Halsall Rel: Son Occ: General Carter
Mary FAZAKERLEY U 18 F Halsall Rel: Daur
John MARSHALL U 22 M Halsall Rel: Boarder General Carter

---Mary Jane Fazakerley [daughter of Richard Fazakerley and Margaret                    Cave) christened 1865 Jan 22 Halsall born about 1865.

---Mary Fazakerley U 18 F Halsall, Rel: Daur [from the 1881 Census above] would have been born about 1863. An age difference of 2 years, might be 1 or 3 years depending on actual birth dates. Not a bad fit with 70 year old memories.

---The unmarried daughter Mary Fazakerley is living with her mother:

Mary FAZAKERLEY W 58 F Halsall Rel: Head And her brother John FAZAKERLEY U 20 M Halsall Rel: Son Occ: General Carter
This Mary, the mother and a widow would have born about 1823 and John, the brother, would have been born about 1861. 1 dare say that at this point you are putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 3 of your database census records for Richard and Mary.

However, I did not have access at this time to any other information and of course I am researching several other branches of my family through at least 8 counties in England. In the meantime my mum was methodically searching for Richard and Mary in the Census records and had found the following:

1861 Census Halsall Address: Aspinwall Lane; Fazakerley Richard, Head of household, Age 42 (b. abt. 1819), Occ., Boatman, Canal Captain, Born Halsall Mary, Wife, Age 37 (1824), b. Halsall Ann, dau., unmarried, Age 20, b. Halsall other children b. Liverpool; Robert 15 Occ., Mate; Jane, 12; James, 10; William, 7; Edward, 4; John, 4 m; Ellen, Sister, Age 31, Occ., Nurse, b. Halsall (Couple: Richard & Mary) Places: Halsall; Liverpool, Lancashire Co.

I really liked the look of this record but I was really looking for the 4 Fazakerley sister's father Richard [born about 1841-2]. No Richard on this record and no Mary either. So I put the record away and continued chasing the Curtis branch of my family from Lincoln to Liverpool and Hull, via Nottingham and Sheffield.

That was up to a few weeks ago when I started to input ALL my researches into "Legacy" software. I suddenly had one of those genealogical electric shocks. The one where your brain gives a sudden lurch and suddenly fit everything into place [maybe this only happens to me?].

Essentially I realised that Mary was born before the time of the 1861 Census in Aspinwall Lane. Also in 1861 Richard would have been about 19 and may well have left home. So I may have a census record with both Richard and Mary missing for different reasons.

To summarize I believe that the family units in the 1861 Aspinwall Lane record and the 1881 Benledi St record are the same. Richard has tragically died in the accident and his wife Mary is living in Liverpool with the 2 youngest children, John and Mary.

Mary the mother is 37 [born Halsall] in 1861 and 58 [born Halsall] in 1881; John is 4 months [born Halsall] in 1861 and 20 [born Halsall] in 1881; Mary isn't born in 1861 and 18 [born Halsall] in 1881

Additionally my mum had told me that of the 4 Fazakerley sisters Susannah and Mary Jane were much more "worldly" having moved to Liverpool whilst Ellen and Margaret remained more "countrified" remaining in the Ormskirk / Halsall area.

Additionally, having identified Aunt Polly, as Richard’s sister and being very close in age and friendship with Mary Jane it was possible to add the following link. I knew Mary Jane Fazakerley married William Kenny who lived in Great Howard Street area of Liverpool i.e. very near the docks. William Kenny was foreman horseman for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway and his son was a carter. John Fazakerley in Benledi St is also a carter and Benledi St is very near Great Howard Street. Thus it was not unreasonable to assume that Mary Jane might have moved to Liverpool to be with her grandmother and Aunt and could have become acquainted with William Kenny through the families shared occupation.

My mum knew that Aunt Polly married a man called John Lunt, they lived in Maghull, ran a hay and straw business and possibly an ale house. My mum was highly delighted when she found the following 1891 Census record:

16 Old Turnpike Road, Maghull
John Lunt Head 34 Hay and Straw Dealer born Lydiate;
Mary J Lunt Wife 28 born Halsall
Richard Lunt Son 4 born Maghull;
Henry Lunt Son 1 born Maghull

15 Turnpike Road, Maghull
Mary Fazakerley Widow 70 Seamstress, small shop Halsall

My mum knew straight away that this Mary J Lunt was "Aunt Polly". The age matches exactly with previous 1881 Census record and she was born in Halsall. Her first son is called Richard [always a good sign]. The Mary Fazakerley living next door is I believe Mary J Lunt's mother Mary Johnson who married Richard Fazakerley [Canal Boat Captain] on 18 May 1840 in Halsall. Incidentally Susannah Fazakerley's occupation also seamstress??

I had intended to cover much more than this. However, I think this is an appropriate place to end this episode. Having read the above it is a bit repetitive; I hope you do not find it too boring.

I attempted to obtain John Fazakerley's [Benledi Street 1881] birth certificate. However the request produced the following which I could not find in your database.

Birth: John Fazakerley born 14 June 1861 Holmes Tarleton (North of Ormskirk) Father Richard Fazakerley Farmer, Mother Mary Fazakerley formerly Bolton Birth Registered by mother 25 June 1861

I did obtain Aunt Polly's birth certificate: Born 14 February 1863 in Halsall to Richard Fazakerley Boatman & Mary Fazakerley formerly Johnson

Obviously given time I will obtain all relevant certificates the only prohibition being the cost.

I do agree that Maghull Churchyard is a potential source of Fazakerleys. Next time I visit my mum and also have the time I will attempt to visit and record what I can. If you do have any particular names and dates to look for let me know. However, I make no promises as to when I will be able to go. I think Aunt Polly will be buried there and possibly her mother.

Nearly bedtime so I will send this e-mail to you and say goodnight

Best wishes
Stephen

Hello Billie

Your database gets better and better. The divisions you have made make upload times just right. I spend a lot of time looking at all the data stored on it. I am having trouble opening Malcolm's FazIGI HTML I guess it is just too big for my computer, I will wait for the cut down versions.

I am so pleased that your generosity of time and inclination has resulted in so many responding by offering their own information to add to your database.

Here is the installment 4 of my Fazakerleys.

Obviously as this is less recent timeframe there are more possibles than definites I have attempted to reconcile the data available to me but there is still much to do.

1] Having established Richard (b1843) and Mary (Aunt Polly) (b1863) as children of Richard and Mary Fazakerley but absent on the 1861 Census (Richard had died and Mary had not been born) I then came across the wonderful 1851 Census record on your database

1851 Census; March, 1851; LDS Film # 0087176; Regis. Dist., Great Howard Street; Ward Vauxhall; Enu. Dist., # 1 L Eccles. Dist., Vauxhall; Address: 31 Carruthers St.; Richard, Head of Household, Age 32, Occ., Beer House Keeper, Born, Halsall Mary, Wife, Age 28, Occ., Beer House Keeper, Born, Halsall Ann, Dau., Age 10, Scholar, born, Halsall Richard, son, Age 8, Scholar, born Halsall Robert, son, Age 6, Scholar, born, Liverpool Jane, dau., Age 2, born Liverpool

[Question: I wonder were this family was at the time of the 1871 Census. They could have been on their boat as far away as Leeds!]

This shows Richard as 2nd child in the family. From the dates of birth of the children it would appear that the family probably moved from Halsall to Liverpool between 1843‑45. Also of interest is that Richard is a beer house keeper and not a boatman (as shown on the 1861 Census). [Incidentally when I mentioned the beer house to my mum she realised that what she remembered from her youth was not the family discussing Aunt Polly as having an ale house (her phrase was ale house, like beer house not the more usual British usage of public house) but that her (Aunt Polly') father did.]

Carruthers Street is still in existence and ran alongside a short spur of the Leeds Liverpool Canal.

I thought it strange that Richard is a beer house keeper in 1851 and then in 1861 he is a Canal Boat Captain. Canal boat families working the Leeds and Liverpool Canal were a very tight and separate community. They tended to marry amongst themselves and from my limited knowledge anyone called a Captain of a canal boat has been an owner of the boat rather than someone who simply works the boat that is owned by another. This appears to suggest that either the boat was inherited or he bought it.

2] Next I looked at the other children shown on the Census. So I carded out a search of the IGI looking for any children of a Richard and Mary Fazakerley in Lancashire and found the following 26 possibles. I excluded any christened and/or born before 1835 Richard and Mary having been married in 1840. This left 18. Assuming the Burial Record on your database is probably that of Captain Richard Fazakerley [1869 Aug 06 Richard Fazakerley Halsall Parish Church; Burial; J. Cotter, Min.; Age 50 (b. abt. 1819) Of Downholland Halsall] then children born from 1872 onwards can reasonably be discounted

3] 1 have cross‑referenced these against the names shown in the 1851 and 1861 Census records and data from your database (BDB). The list is as follows

Betty [Unlikely] [IGI] Gender: F Christening: 13 Mar 1836 Paul Street Primitive Methodist, Preston

Margaret Elizabeth [Unlikely, Captain Richard probably dead by this time] [IGI] Gender: F Christening: 4 Mar 1872 Ormskirk [BDB] 1872 Mar 04 Margaret Elizabeth Fazakerley C; Parents Richard & Mary Ormskirk Lancashire

William [Unlikely, Captain Richard probably dead by this time] [IGI] Gender: M Christening: 29 Oct 1874 Aughton By Ormskirk [BDB] 1874 Oct 29 William Fazakerley C; Parents Richard & Mary Aughton by Ormskirk Lancashire

Jane [Unlikely, Captain Richard probably dead by this time] [IGI] Gender: F Christening: 3 Sep 1876 Aughton By Ormskirk Jane FAZAKERLEY Gender: F Christening: 3 Sep 1876 Halsall [BDB] 1876 Sep 03 Jane Fazakerley C; Parents; (another entry states Halsall) Richard & Mary Aughton by Ormskirk Lancashire

Henry [Unlikely, Captain Richard probably dead by this time] [IGI] Gender: M Christening: 16 Feb 1879 Aughton By Ormskirk .

These last 3 children are likely to be sibling and children of another Richard and Mary Fazakerley.

This gives on the basis of convincing evidence and in order of birth Ann, Richard, Robert, Jane, James, William, Edward, John, Mary and a possible Thomas.

The next thing I did was see if there were any references to these Fazakerley children upon the 1881 Census. I have also included any evidence obtained from your database.

If James was 10 on 7 Apr 1861 [the date of 1861 Census] then he was born between 7 Apr 1850 and 6 Apr 1851. Therefore on 3 Apr 1881 [the date of 1861 Census] he would be 29 approaching 30. The following James is a likely candidate.

From IGI: James FAZAKERLEY married Ellen WITTER Marriage: 5 Jul 1875 Saint Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England

I mentioned the above entry to my mum and she said that she remembers her grandmother [who would be James' niece] pointing out a person once and saying "she is called Witter, they are relatives".

Interestingly, there is also this James who might be a contender if the Census dates are not accurate.
Dwelling: Alert (Name Of Canal Boat) Census Place: Blackrod, Lancs
James FAZACKERLEY M 32 M Liverpool, Lancs Occ: Master Boatman

William born about 1854:

1881 Census, Very likely to be William Fazakerley, age and birthplace correct, and first son called Richard.

Edward born about 1857 in Liverpool:

Possibly the following Edward from the 1881 Census, although he is born in Halsall. Interestingly a family called Wetter rather like Witter. Yet again the first son is called Richard suggesting Edward's father was called Richard.

I think he is the following, born to another Richard and Mary Fazakerley. It would appear that this Richard Fazakerley was from Aughton married Mary ??? from Halsall

It is interesting that so many of the family MAY-- from the 1881 Census records--have been carters in Liverpool. I imagine that having used horses for pulling boats they must have gained a lot of knowledge and experience that was transferable to carting. Also if the records are correct most of them lived in Kirkdale, Everton and Vauxhall areas of Liverpool only a few miles away from their mother at Benledi Street.

Well this is the end of this episode of "Faz Trek The Next Generation". I will, eventually, check out the above marriages by ordering the corresponding Marriage Certificates. There is one more episode yet if you can bear it.

I would welcome any corrections or observations to this episode in particular.

Best wishes

Hello Billie

Just a short'ish e-mail to let you know that I am still working on what I had assumed to be the fourth and final episode of my Fazakerleys. However, I think it is going to have to be split into at least 2 sections as it has proved to be very complex and brain-numbing exercise.

However in the meantime here is some good news. I received the Birth Certificate for William Henry Fazakerley who I believe is the same one that appears on the 1861 Census Halsall Address: Aspinwall Lane; Richard Fazakerley, Head of household, Age 42 (b. abt. 1819), Occ., Boatman, Canal Captain, Born Halsall; Mary, Wife, Age 37 (1824), b. Halsall; Ann, dau., unmarried, Age 20, b. Halsall; other children b. Liverpool; Robert 15 Occ., Mate; Jane, 12; James, 10; William, 7; Edward, 4; John, 4 m; Ellen, Sister, Age 31, Occ., Nurse, b. Halsall (Couple: Richard & Mary) Places mentioned: Halsall; Liverpool, Lancashire Co.

The information is as follows: Registration District Liverpool 1854 Birth in the Sub-district of Howard Street in the County of Lancaster No 148
When and Where: 27 October 1854 Boat "N" Canal
Who: William Henry, Boy
Father: Richard Fazackerley, Occupation: Boatman
Mother: Mary Fazakerley, formerly Johnson
Informant: x the mark of Mary Fazackerley, Mother, Boat "N" Canal Liverpool
Registered: 6 Dec 1854
Registrar: Geo. Gurden

Thus: In 1854 two William Fazakerleys were born in Liverpool.
The first to William Faz and Margaret Goulbourn of Carruthers Street. This William died at 16 months of age is obviously not the William Henry above. He is the son of William Fazakerley and Margaret Goulborn born 16 April 1854. 1 have a copy of this Birth Certificate.
[IGI] Gender: M Christening: 28 Jan 1855 All Souls Vauxhall, Liverpool
However the following record 2674 of your database suggests that a William Henry (Parents Richard and Mary) was baptised in Vauxhall on 1855 Jan 28.
1855 Jan 28 William Henry Fazackerley All Saints All Souls, Vauxhall; Baptism; A. Hume, Incumbent; LDS Film # 1068892 Richard & Mary; Occ., Laborer; Abode: Hindley, Wigan; Places mentioned in the report: Liverpool; Wigan Lancashire Co.

The occupation of the father is Labourer and the abode is Wigan. I wonder if this William Henry is the same as that who's Birth Certificate I have just received.

Any ideas, please?
Thanks,
Stephen
PS Fascinating bunch the Fazakerleys!!!

Hi Billie

Sorry about the delay in supplying the next exciting? section of my Fazakerleys. Apart from life getting in the way I really needed to put this section aside and come back to it as it was getting too complex.

Well here is next section. Obviously as it goes further back in time there is more uncertainty and therefore more loose ends. I have not made any blind assumptions but have attempted to make connections via existence. See what you think:

Taking Captain Richard Fazakerley in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 Census as reference points:

[BFD] 1841 Census Richard Fazakerley Halsall Parish; Halsall Township; Living in Halsall Village; Richard, Age 20; Occ., Boatman
[BFD] 1851 Census; March 1851; Regis. Dist., Great Howard Street; Ward Vauxhall; Address: 31 Carruthers St.; Richard, Head of Household, Age 32, Occ., Beer House Keeper, Born, Halsall
[BFD] 1861 Census 1861 Census; Reg. Sub Dist., Halsall; Enu. Dist. 2‑C; Eccles. Dist., St. Cuthberts; Address: Aspinwall Lane; Richard, Head of household, Age 42 Occ., Boatman, Canal Captain, Born Halsall

He would have been born about 1818-1819 or as late as 1821 according to the 1841 Census [which is not as reliable on dates] and the following appears to be the best and possibly only likely available match. The fact that that his father was called Richard (his son Captain Richard names his first son Richard, this was usually after the paternal grandfather) , that he was a boatman and the parents abode was Halsall the place Captain Richard twice reported to the Census enumerator are 3 points of evidence.

[BFD] Richard Fazakerley Ormskirk Parish; Bapt.; Born, Dec. 12 1818; Bapt. Feb. 14, 1819; ‑Williamson, Off. Minister Richard & Jane; Occ. Boatman; Abode, Halsall, Ormskirk; Addtionally there is the fortunate fact that on the 1861 Census Richard's sister Ellen is shown
[BFD] 1861 Census 1861 Census; Supt. Reg. Sub Dist., Halsall; Enu. Dist. 2‑C; Eccles. Dist., St. Cuthberts; Address: Aspinwall Lane; Richard, Head of household, Age 42 Occ., Boatman, Canal Captain, Born Halsall Mary, Wife, Age 37, b. Halsall; Ann, dau., unmarried, Age 20, b. Halsall; other children b. Liverpool; Robert, 15, Occ., Mate; Jane, 12; James, 10; William, 7; Edward, 4; John, 4 mos.; Ellen, Sister, Age 31, Occ., Nurse, b. Halsall
Ellen appears as a nurse presumably nursing the 4 month old baby John. Ellen would have been born 1829-30 and the following is a very good "fit".
[BFD] 1829 May 17 Ellen Fazakerley Halsall Parish Church; Bapt. Richard & Jane; Occ., Boatman; Of Halsall, Halsall, Lancashire
[MF IGI] Chr F FAZAKERLEY Ellen Richard FAZAKERLEY Jane 17 May 1829 Halsall
Once again the parents are Richard and Jane, of Halsall, and Richard is a boatman.

Being reasonably sure the Richard and Ellen above are brother and sister of the same parents Richard and Jane I searched Malcolm's database for this couple and only found the following within the possible time-frame:
[MF IGI] Mar F FAZAKERLEY Jane Richard FAZAKERLEY Abt. 1815 of Halsall

However, I also found the following on your database:
[BFD] 1815 Jun 12 Richard Fazackley St. Paul's Church, St. Pauls Square; Marriage; Source; FHL # 1068956 & 0093869; by Banns; J. B. Monk, Offic. Minister; Both signed with an X Parents not listed; Richard & Jane Bridge; Richard, Occ., Labourer; Jane, Spinster Liverpool

I favour the former for its Halsall connections and conversely do not favour the latter because Richard's occupation is a Labourer not a boatman, also there is a Liverpool connection. Regarding the former it refers to Richard Fazakerley marrying Jane Fazakerley. As other IGI entries record both the spouses' full names is it safe to assume that the both were called Fazakerley before marriage? Of course this doesn't preclude Jane Fazakerley from being a widow and marrying a brother or cousin of her deceased husband.

I have to admit that I am fonder of the Victorian period of my family's history. There is more information, it is more reliable and much interesting. Additionally I have never dabbled in Church Records too much and to be honest am not too bothered about tracing my descendency back to the Norman Conquest. Having said all that I am sure [hope] someone may have already made the best possible connections of this pre 1800 material. I do feel I am floundering with this period.

A quick check of the IGI gave me 16 possible Richard Fazakerleys born or christened in the timeframe, this appears to have been Margaret Twist's conclusion. The most likely is: Richard Fazakerley Gender: M Birth: Abt. 1790 Of Halsall, Ormskirk, Lancashire, England No parents but his Spouse was Jane

Could he have died in 1812 having only had Richard??? 1812 ‑ Richard Fazakerley St. John's Church; Burial; Grave Register; Rank 8, Grave 1 Occupation: Brewer (another entry states Richard Fazackerley, Brewer, Rank 5 Grave 38, another person?) Liverpool Lancashire. OR, 1831 Aug 02 Richard Fazakerley Burial; Halsall Parish Church; Age 47 (b. abt. 1784) Of Halsall Halsall Lancashire

1841 Jan 14 Richard Fazakerley St. Thomas' Church, Park Lane; Index to Gravestones; Burial; Richard, Age 40, Occ., Carter; Cause of death, Tet--; Buried January 17, 3:00 pm; Address, Kitchen St.?? ; LDS Film # 1564328; (b. abt. 1801) Liverpool Lancashire

 HOWEVER, BACK TO THE PLOT

Having reassured myself that Jane and Richard are the most likely parents of Captain Richard and Ellen I searched for all children belonging to a Richard and Jane in this timeframe. So in chronological order of birth or baptism:

Marriage: There are 2 possible marriages within the time-frame:

[BFD] 1844 Oct. 27 Ann Fazakerley St. Silas' Church; Marriage; Ann m. William Goulbourn; William's father: Henry Goulbourn; Ann's father: Richard Fazakerley Liverpool Lancashire
[NOTES the second marriage is interesting because there is a reference to William Fazakerley marrying a Margaret Goulbourn in 1845 Margaret's father is also called Henry Goulbourn so it is possible that William Goulbourn and Margaret Goulbourn [siblings] married Ann Fazakerley and William Fazakerley [siblings].

1845 Dec 25 William Fazakerley St. Peters Church; LDS Film # 093922; Marriage; by Banns; J. G. Headlow, Curate; Witnesses: Wm. H. Also an Edward Goulbourn was a witness to the marriage of Benjamin Cave and Ann Snape in 1832. Ann's father was Robert Snape boatman. Benjamin and Ann's daughter Margaret Cave was the first wife of Richard Fazakerley the son of Captain Fazakerley. I am not sure if this is relevant but it is certainly worth recording.

I found the following William Goulbourn on the 1881 Census possibly the widow of Ann Fazakerley. Interesting that a son is called Richard

I did find the following reference to a marriage of a George Fazakerley, his father is called Richard and is a Flateman [flatman] used as another name for a coastal sea boat that can function in canals. They are sometimes referred to as flatboats or flat bottom boats.
[BFD] 1851 May 20 George Fazakerley St. Peters Church; LDS Film # 093924; Marriage; by Banns; A. J. Tomlin, Curate; George, Occ., Flateman, res. Cannon St. m. Ann Pblett (?), minor, res., Cannon St., father: Samuel P___ Occ. Brewer; Witnesses: Richard Fazackerley & Ellen Fazackerley (x);
George's father: Richard Fazakerley, Occ., Flatman; George signed his name with an X (Couple: George & Ann P--); Liverpool Lancashire Co.

Interesting that the witnesses are Richard Fazackerley & Ellen Fazackerley possible evidence of them being George's brother and sister. I checked the 1881 Census using the advanced search for P??blett and found only the following names in Lancashire:
Mostly PIMBLETT; Occasional PEMBLETT, PANBLETT and PIMBLET
I checked the marriage in the BMD index and her name is given as Ann Pimbleft

Also interestingly this reference to a Barge Captain called Pimblett in 1881 Vessel: "Charles"; Census Place: Liverpool, Lancashire, England Source: FHL Film 1341863 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 3604 Folio 154 Page; Marr Age Sex Birthplace

On the 1881 Census is a reference to a George and Ann Fazackerley. George is born in Halsall. It matches the timeframe and also Wigan is on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and has its own group of Fazakerleys.
Additionally there is a son called Samuel and Ann P??blett's father is called Samuel.

Of the two possible marriage references [below] I prefer the first for the number of points of evidence. There is an Oldhall Street in Liverpool near the terminus of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Ellen marries into another boat family. What is strange is that her father is given as Joseph Fazakerley (boatman) and not Richard. Is this an translation error??

So using the IGI and your database as a starting point I found the following 6 possible children of Richard and Jane Fazakerley born or christened as follows:1816 Sep 01 Susannah Fazakerley; 1818 Dec 12 Richard Fazakerley; 1822 Jul 21 Ann Fazakerley; 1827 Mar 18 George Fazakerley; 1829 May 17 Ellen Fazakerley; 1832 Dec 18 Thomas Fazakerley [FDB] From IGI Thomas Fazakerley 18 Dec 1831

That appears to be a convenient place to stop. There is more !!!!

Hope you are keeping well. It looks like I will be visiting the Liverpool area in the middle of June. I am going to have a search of the churchyard in Maghull. Please let me know of anything you are looking for.

Best wishes

 Hi Billie

Here is the last [I promise] section. Things get less defined with more loose ends to pursue. It follows on directly from the last section 6 that I sent.

Then I came across the following Census record on your super database:

Is the following the Henry above???

--Ellen born 1831 would be 31 in 1861 with Captain Richard as Nurse 31 unmarried
--Ann born 1822 would be 39 in 1861 none found

Even given the inaccuracies of the date of births in IGI and the 1841 Census there are still amazing coincidences between Ann, Ellen and Thomas.

It is also worth adding the following 1841 entries:
[BFD] 1841 Census Halsall Township; Living in Halsall Village; Richard Fazakerley, Age 20; Occ., Boatman Mary, Age 19
[BFD] 1841 Census; LDS Film # 927559; Halsall Parish; Halsall Townships William, Age 20 Slept on a boat with Robert Stowell & James Fazakerley, Age 15 Halsall Parish; Halsall Township Lancaster (Lancashire)
[BFD] 1841 Census; Halsall Parish; Halsall Township, Robert, Age 10 Lives with Robert Segar, Age 55, Farmer Halsall Parish; Halsall Township Lancaster (Lancashire)

Curiouser and curiouser as Alice said.

So in 1841 of those found on the IGI as having parents called Richard and Jane:
Susannah Fazakerley would be 25 and probably married if still alive.
Richard Fazakerley is married to Mary is in Halsall Village on the night of the Census. Their abode may have been a house or a boat
Ann Fazakerley 19 Ellen Fazakerley 11 Thomas Fazakerley 9 They appear to be together with Henry, Age 6 [born about 1835] & Henry & Jane Hesketh (Ages 35 & 40) in Aspinwall Lane Scarisbrick

George Fazakerley who would be about 14 is nowhere to be found.

Also there is William, Age 20 Slept on a boat with Robert Stowell & James Fazakerley, Age 15 Halsall Parish; Halsall Township, Lancaster (Lancashire)
[BFD] 1841 Census; Halsall Parish; Halsall Township; Robert, Age 10 Lives with Robert Segar, Age 55, Farmer Halsall Parish; Halsall Township Lancaster (Lancashire)

Additionally where are Richard and Jane the parents?? And why are the children living with Henry and Jane Hesketh???

I do not see one simple and obvious answer at the present although I have lots of ideas. If Richard and Jane who probably married in about 1815 were say 20 at marriage then in 1841 they would be about 45 years old. Perhaps:
(&#61623) They had died; ( &#61623) They simply were in Halsall or Scarisbrick on the night of the census but were not counted; (&#61623) They were on a boat somewhere else on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal even in Yorkshire.

What about Henry and Jane Hesketh. Well Hesketh is yet another of the common boatman surnames on the L&L Canal perhaps Jane Hesketh was originally a Fazakerley at 40 years old in 1841 she would not be a sibling of Captain Richard etc. but possibly a younger sister of Richard (Richard and Jane) that is Captain Richard's Aunt. Also perhaps Richard of Richard and Jane died and Jane married again to Henry Hesketh. The children would have kept the name Fazakerley, however Jane's daughter Susannah would be 25 when Jane was about 40 a bit tight a time scale for marriage to Richard and birth of Susannah. Although it is not unknown. I will not pursue the possibly of remarriage of Jane Fazakerley to Henry Hesketh otherwise I think steam will come out of my ears attempting to juggle the two strands of Jane Fazakerley as either Captain Richard's Aunt or Mother. I will assume that Jane of Jane and Henry Hesketh is the children’s Aunt.

Also a Jane Fazakerly was a witness at William Fazakerley's marriage to Margaret Goulboum. This Jane could have been William's Aunt.
1845 Dec 25 William Fazakerley St. Peter's Church; LDS Film # 093922; Marriage; by Banns, J. G. Headlow, Curate; Witnesses: Wm. H. Margaret Goulboum, Res. same, Father: Henry Goulboum, Occ., Shipwright William's father: Richard Fazakerley, Occ., Boatman; (William & Margaret Goulbourn) Liverpool

Additionally a Jane Fazakerley was witness to the marriage of an Ellen Fazakerley and a John Hesketh. 1812 Mar 16 Ellen (Eleanor) Fazackerly; Fazakerley St. Paul's Church, St. Paul's Square: Marriage; Husband, John Hesketh; Source: FHL# 1068956; Occ., Carter; Marriage, by Banns; Ellen, Spinster, J. B. Monk, Offic. Minister; Both of Liverpool Parish; Both signed with an X Witness: Jane Fazakerley Liverpool Lancashire

Also an Ellen Fazakerley was witness to the marriage of Ann Fazakerley [Ann Christening: 14 Jun 1829 Maghull daughter of James (possibly brother of Richard (Richard and Jane)) FAZAKERLEY and Eliza] and William Carrington in 1849. If all this were correct Ellen Hesketh would be Ann's Aunt in the following reference:
1849 Feb 19 Ann Fazakerley St. Peters Church; LDS Film 093923; Marriage; by Banns; J. G. Headlam, Curate both signed with an
X; Ann, res. Finch St., m. William Carrington, res. Finch St., Occ., Carter, father: Wm. Carrington, Farmer', Witnesses: Thomas Baldwin & Ellen Hesketh Ann's father: James Fazakerley, Occ., Boatman Liverpool

It is possible that the following were [very speculative] siblings:
Richard (of Rchard Fazakerley and Jane)
Jane (of Jane and Henry Hesketh)
Ellen (of Ellen and John Hesketh) also
James (of James and Eliza) I believe this might be the James that is father [who is a boatman] mentioned in a number of other Fazakerley weddings

It is possible that the following were siblings and children of Richard Fazakerley and Jane:
Susannah 25
Richard 20 (but only according to the 1841 Census)
William 20 (but only according to the 1841 Census)
Ann 19 with Henry & Jane Hesketh
Ellen 11 with Henry & Jane Hesketh
Robert 10 lives with Robert Segar
Thomas 9 with Henry & Jane Hesketh
Henry 6 with Henry & Jane Hesketh

Robert may be an exception living away from his siblings in another household and there is a bit of a squeeze of 3 children in 3 years.

Prior to all this I was independently arriving at the conclusion that there was probably a William who was a son of Richard and Jane Fazakerley but who doesn't show on the IGI as such.

IGI Children of William and Margaret

Firstly there is the marriage of William Fazakerley to Margaret Goulbourn in 1845: Dec 25 William Fazakerley St. Peters Church; LDS Film # 093922; Marriage; by Banns; J. G. Headlow, Curate; Witnesses: Wm. H. Goulbourn & Jane Fazakerley‑, William, Occ., Carter, Res., Carruthers St. m. Margaret Goulboum, Res. same, Father: Henry Goulboum, Occ., Shipwright William's father: Richard Fazakerley, Occ., Boatman; (William & Margaret Goulbourn) Liverpool

And Ann Fazakerleys marriage to William Goulboum in 1844 with the same name of father Henry Goulbourn it is possible that William Goulboum and Margaret Goulbourn are brother and sister and the timeframe fits.

[BFD] 1844 Oct. 27 Ann Fazakerley St. Silas' Church; Marriage‑, Ann m. William Goulboum; William's father: Henry Goulbourn Ann's father: Richard Fazakerley Liverpool Lancashire

Also a William Fazakerley boatman shows in the 1851 City Directory living in the Carruthers Street a few houses away from Captain Richard Fazakerley who is at this time running a Beer House.

1851 William Fazakerley 1851; City Directory; Boatman: # 7 Carruthers St. Liverpool

1851 Richard Fazakerley 1851; City Directory; Beer House; # 31 Carruthers St. Liverpool

A strong indication that they were related; possibly brothers??

So next I checked the IGI for children of William Fazakerley and Margaret:

#5 William Gender: M Christening: 22 May 1854 is the one I received a Birth Certificate for and this shows his father to be William Fazakerley and mother to be Margaret formerly Goulbourn.

All the names of these possible children fit with the general naming styles of this branch of the Fazakerleys.

Additionally are the following 1881 Census records which are probably William and his wife Margaret. He is in Liverpool on the boat "Dace" with his son George #9 age 18 whilst Thomas #11 age 14 is head of the boat of the sister boat "Perch". Margaret is at home in Wigan with Daughters Margaret J 15, Susannah 11 and Ellen 8 which fit nicely with #s 10, 12, 13.

This leaves the potential children #1-8
# 1 Ann Fazakerley Gender: F Christening: 22 Nov 1846 Saint Peter, Liverpool
#2 James Fazakerley Gender: M Christening: 9 Jul 1848 Saint Peter, Liverpool
On the 1881 Census there is a James Fazakerley [Blackrod is not that far from Wigan and also on the
Leeds and Liverpool Canal]

You will perhaps recall from episode 3 that Captain
Richard also had a son called James born about 1851
If James was 10 on 7 Apr 1861 [the date of 1861 Census] then he was born between 7 Apr 1850 and 6 Apr
1851. Therefore on 3 Apr 1881 [the date of 1861 Census] he would be 29 approaching 30. The following
James is a likely candidate.
Dwelling: 29 Wrexham St, Kirkdale, Liverpool
James FAZAKERLEY M 29 M Liverpool Rel: Head Occ: Carter
Ellen FAZAKERLEY M 29 F Lathom Rel: Wife
Elizabeth FAZAKERLEY 4 F Liverpool Rel: Daur Occ: Scholar
Mary A. FAZAKERLEY 2 F Liverpool Rel: Daur
Richard FAZAKERLEY 1 M Liverpool Rel: Son
George F. CORBETT U 30 M West Derby Rel: Boarder Occ: Labourer

From IGI:
James FAZAKERLEY married Ellen WITTER Marriage: 5 Jul 1875 Saint Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. I mentioned the above entry to my mum and she said that she remembers her grandmother [who would be James' niece] pointing out a person once and saying "she is called Witter, they are relatives". Interestingly, there also this James who might be a contender if the Census dates are not accurate.
Dwelling: Alert (Name Of Canal Boat) Census Place: Blackrod, Lancs
James FAZACKERLEY M 32 M Liverpool, Lancs Occ:Master Boatman

Thus I think, at the moment that William's son James is the boatman on the "Alert" in Blackrod whereas
Richard's son James is the Garter in Kirkdale, Liverpool.

Hi Billie

Well I have returned after my trip to Ormskirk and
Maghull.

Sad to say I found absolutely nothing for you or for
me. Maghull Chapel is a small part of the original
church that was retained when the new St Andrews
Church was built during Victorian times. The chapel
and small associated graveyard is located in the
corner of the new church’s graveyard. It is very
dark, damp and atmospheric being the shaded by several
large trees.

The whole of the chapel’s graveyard is overgrown and
had just been mowed hence everything was covered in
mulched vegetation. There are many stones standing but
also many that are laid on the ground and partially or
totally obscured by soil and debris.

I spent 3 hours checking both the old and new
graveyards and only found the following reference to
any Fazakerleys.

Cyril John beloved husband of Emily Fazackerley died
29 Jun 1959 aged 57. I believe that there is a church
at Lydiate and this may be where the Fazakerleys might
have been buried?

I had a browse around Ormskirk graveyard and found a
few references to Fazakerleys.

Ernest Edward Fazakerley son of Edward and Elizabeth
of Lathom died Sept 17 1891 aged 4½ years. The
reminder of the inscription was indecipherable.

Robert died 10 June 1891 age [?]1 and Elizabeth
Fazakerley died 1[?] Feb 1909 age 62 of Bickerstaffe
and Mary Daughter died 14 July 1929 Age 81.

John Fazakerley Aug 28 1808 in the 57 year of age and
Mary wife Nov 20 1812 aged 58.

I hope the above might mean something to someone, one
day. I haven’t cross-checked them with your
database, so you may have the information already.

I have returned to reading all the material that I
sent you and which you have kindly added to your Faz
site. I have found one obvious error!!

In installment six I quote the following:

=================================================
#5 Ellen Fazakerley

[BFD] 1829 May 17 Ellen Fazakerley Halsall Parish

[MF IGI] Chr F FAZAKERLEY Ellen Richard FAZAKERLEY

mentioned: Halsall; Liverpool Lancashire Co. (may be
able to assume that as Ellen is not given a surname
she is still a Fazakerley and still unmarried?)

Of the two possible marriage references [below] I
prefer the first for the number of points of evidence.
There is an Oldhall Street in Liverpool near the
terminus of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Ellen
marries into another boat family. What is strange is
that her father is given as Joseph Fazakerley
(boatman) and not Richard. Is this a translation
error??

=======================================================
Now this is the error; in both the marriages quoted
Ellen Fazakerley is a minor [under 21] in 1857
therefore they were born after 1836. However the Ellen
Fazakerley I am referring to is the sister of Captain
Richard Fazakerley and on the 1861 Census she is given
as being 31 years of age. This appears to be a rather
large difference anything from 6-10 years?

Also she cannot be the Ellen who married John Dobson.
As you know I have been confused by the reference to
Ellen’s father being Joseph Fazakerley [boatman]. I
decided to send for a copy of the entry of marriage
and have found all the details are correct including
Ellen’s father being Joseph Fazakerley [boatman].

This is really puzzling me as I have searched the
available data and can find no other reference to a
Joseph Fazakerley [boatman] and a daughter Ellen. The
certificate I obtained is the copy made by the priest
into the General Register of Marriages. I shall have
to check the original in Liverpool sometime in case an
error was made.

In the hope of clearing up some of the many unsolved
problems found in the case study I have started
logically looking at marriages and obtaining the
corresponding certificates.

Firstly, I have located the reference for Aunt Polly’s
marriage to John Lunt so I will order this certificate
to establish who John Lunt was. Also I found in the
St Catharine’s Index the references for the marriages
of Edward Fazakerley to Alice Wetter 1880 [given as
Witter in the index but as Wetter on the 1881 Census]
and for the marriage of James Fazakerley to Ellen
Witter 1875.

Edward and James I believe are two of Richard
Fazakerley’s brothers i.e. two of the uncles of the 4
Fazakerley girls. If the the certificates prove
otherwise then it will be two more marriages eliminated
from my searches and may be useful information for
others. I think that this is going to be the best way
to approach the problem of positively identifying all
these Fazakerleys and their in-laws. It should keep me
busy for a long time to come.

Hope you are well and sorry the graveyard searches
were so disappointing.

Best wishes
Stephen

PS I have a copy of a wonderful photo of Mary Jane
Fazakerley but have no scanner. Would it be easier
for me to send you a copy; have you scanning
facilities. I have tried several shops in Leeds and
none can or will scan the photo onto disc for me

Hi Billie

News at last.

I received the Marriage Certificates for the
probable/possible siblings of Richard Fazakerley, the
father of the 4 Fazakerley sisters:

Certificate #1
1875

Parish of Liverpool in the County of Lancaster
Entry No 482
5 Jul 1875
James Fazakerley Full age Bachelor Carter Benledi
Street
Father: Richard Fazakerley - Labourer
Ellen Witter Full age Spinster ---- Hardy Street
Father: Richard Witter - Brewer
Witnesses: Wm Fazakerley
Elizabeth Witter
Curate: Charles Neath?
The name of James and Richard have been changed from
Fazackerley to read Fazakerley

Certificate #2
1874
Marriage solemnized at St Nicholas Church in the
Parish of Liverpool in the County of Lancaster
Entry No 261
9 Dec 1874
Edward Fazakerley 22 Bachelor Carter 32 Hardy Street
Father: Richard Fazakerley (deceased) - Labourer
Alice Witter 22 Spinster ---- 32 Hardy Street
Father: Richard Witter - Foreman Brewer
Witnesses: John F Crank
Elizabeth Crank
Incumbent : F D Bartlett

I was a little puzzled at first viewing these
certificates because of the reference to James and
Edward’s father as Richard Fazakerley a Labourer and
not as a boatman. The latter would have been more
comforting.

I am very happy with the thought that James and Edward
are brothers who married Ellen and Alice Witter. The
Witters have the same Church, address, father’s names,
and occupation in common, good enough for me.

As I said the Faz brothers puzzled me for a while.
Where they actually the children of another Richard.
However, I eventually deciphered James residence as
Benledi Street. You may remember that Mary “Aunt
Polly” and her brother John and their mother Mary were
living there in 1881. Although I know that they were
not there in 1871 it looks like they were residents in
1875 and that James was living with them.

Game, set and match!

The above then tie in with the following from the 1881
Census:

I also received the marriage certificate for Mary
“Aunt Polly” Fazakerley and John Lunt. Not a great
deal of additional information other than John’s
father was a labourer and was also called John Lunt!!!
I think I will have to trace them on Census records
as a family to be sure.

I am now working on William and Robert another two of
the brothers.

Have you heard about the release in September of the
1891 Census on CD rom. You will get a scanned image of
the actual enumerators' books. There will not be the
cross-referencing and indexing of the LDS 1881 set.
However given that I know where dozens of the family
were located in 1881 it shouldn’t be too difficult to
find them 10 years later and with LOTS more children!

I am going to make some more inquries from the
suppliers but think I will invest in the 35 CDs for
Lancashire at a modest pre-release price of £35.

Hope everything is going well. I promise I will copy
and send all the documents I have been intending to
send for so long. Sorry. Time, or lack of it.

Best
Wishes
